Can I ff/rew in files that are not being transcoded?

I have a Samsung BDC5900/XXA and it plays almost everything I have perfectly without transcoding, however I cannot ff or rew, it states that the function is not available on the current disc. Is this something I should be able to do or does it have to be transcoded to allow those functions?

Forget it. I might be partially retarded. The issue was in my inability to correctly operate the remote control. It was late at night and the player was just out the box. the buttons that control ff/rew for the dvd are not the same as the ones that control ff/rew for files coming from a device. sorry for the waste of space.
