View Full Version : PS3 says "unsupported data" when streaming from Mezzmo

Hello, I am trying to figure out why the PS3 will not play my files that I want to stream from my computer using Mezzmo. I can get the files to play if I turn on the transoding option for the PS3 but I would prefer not to do any transcoding. I can take the exact same file and put it on the PS3 hard drive and it will play it fine.

The files were created using handbrake 0.9.5 The Video is h.264 and the audio is ac3 passthru. I went to the handbrake forums asking what I might be doing wrong with the encoding and they said that the setting I used should work just fine on the PS3 and advised me to put a copy on the hard drive and try it. Sure enough the file plays just fine.

So I am wondering if there is something I am missing as to why the PS3 cannot stream the exact same files through Mezzmo.

Hello Steve,

Can you please post FFmpeg information on one of those files (in Mezzmo right-click on the file and use the "Get FFmpeg Information" command) and I'll take a look.

Here is the info for the file that plays on the PS3 hard drive but won't stream without transcoding.

Yes, that file will be transcoded as per the current device profile since we found that files with same characteristics, but encoded by QuickTime, do not play on the PS3.

To pass it through, edit the SonyPlaystation3.prf in your DeviceProfiles folder (see this thread for its location: http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread.php/467-FAQ-Where-are-device-profiles-located) and remove the comments ("<!--" and "-->") in the "mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2" container. Please let me know if you need help with that.

I think I need help editing the file. I found the PS3 profile. I opened it with wordpad and went to edit it but it wants to save as a text document. I have no idea what program to use to edit that kind of file.

Paul

Just edit it with Notepad (or Wordpad is fine too). It's read-only, so you'll need to remove the read-only attribute before you save it. After that, restart the server and try again.

Dennis,
That doesn't appear to have any effect. Still getting "unsupported data" on the PS3 when I turn off transcoding. I tried two different ways of removing the <!-- and -->
Please let me know if I did not do this correctly.

First attemt looked like this with the blank spaces left in:

<avcontainer id="mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2" name="h264aac" encode="0" mimetype="video/mp4" supportschunked="0">

Looks correct (the second way should work for sure). Did you restart Mezzmo server after you saved the file? You overwrote the device profile, right (as opposed to saving it using another filename)?

mgab
05-19-2011, 03:24 PM
Yes, once I turned off the read-only it allowed me to over write the original. I tried a bunch of different restart options. Everything from restarting the mezzmo server to restarting the whole computer and restarted the PS3 also.

Paul

Sorry, I forgot that you also need to add the audio stream. So, just replace that container with the following:

<avcontainer id="mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2" name="h264aac" encode="0" mimetype="video/mp4" supportschunked="0">
<video>
<format id="mpeg4" encode="0">
</format>
</video>
<video>
<format id="h264" encode="0">
</format>
</video>
<audio>
<format id="aac" encode="0">
</format>
</audio>
<audio>
<format id="ac3" encode="0">
</format>
</audio>
</avcontainer>

Dennis, that appears to have worked :D
I didn't have time to test everything yet but I could now see the thumbnails on the ps3 and I played a couple of different files and all seemed well.

It seems to have fixed another issue that I was willing to live with too. Before the fix I couldn't play the same file more than once without restarting the PS3 and after a quick test I was able to play the same file two times in a row with no hiccups.

Only thing I forgot to check is if it reporting the right file size now. Before the fix it was showing all my files as 128GB. I will report back if it fixed that problem too.

Thank you for all the help. Best customer service I have ever received.

Steve

Paul

I'm glad it's better :)

The 128GB file size indicates that this file will be transcoded, so it's expected for incompatible files.

Your PS3 does not support AC3 music files natively, so Mezzmo server is transcoding the music file to a compatible format. Right-click on the ac3 music file in Mezzmo and click 'Properties'. On the Properties dialog, go to the Transcoding tab. You should see a transcoded file listed there. Select it and click 'Get FFmpeg Information' and post it here. If no transcoded file is listed, then Mezzmo may not have been able to transcode the file. Try pre-transcoding the ac3 file manually (see http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread.php/6025-Tutorial-Pre-transcoding-Files), and check the Transcoding pane to see if the file has failed to transcode. If it did, click the 'Failed' text in the Transcoding pane and post the FFmpeg output log log here.

Ok thanks. How about that ac3 file, thats 6 channel right?

It is. See my other post and let us know if transcoding the ac3 file works. If it does, then we can tweak the device profile to transcode to 5.1 channels.
