View Full Version : when are transcoded files deleted/why aren't trans files deleted when source is

Hi - I have a question about the transcoded files. I transcoded some test movies when I first installed mezzmo a week or so ago. But I deleted the source and then added 3 main movies I want to keep. When I look at the transcoded folder, I see not only the 3 newly transcoded files, but many files from the older date - which I presume are from the test files (but I can't tell for sure by the file names). Shouldn't they have been deleted when I deleted the source file? in this case I guess I could manually delete them cause I know they aren't needed - but in the future, what manages those? do I have any control over that? what good is a transcoded file if the source was removed from the folder in the library? my tv would never be able to get to them anyway?

once the pre-configured space is filled up (I know the default is 80g and can be changed) - what happens? does mezzmo automatically delete the oldest transcoded file?

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian,

If the transcoded files are not removed when a source file is removed from Mezzmo, then that's a bug. We'll look into it and fix it. Thanks for alerting us to it.

Mezzmo has automatic garbage collection for transcoded files in the transcoded folder. Once the your maximum folder size limit has been reached (set this in the Transcoding Settings dialog), Mezzmo automatically starts removing the oldest transcoded files.

Thanks Paul -
I was able to reproduce the issue - but maybe it is just my mis-understanding.
If I delete the file from WITHIN mezzmo, the transcoded file is removed. But if I delete the file from within windows, then the transcoded file is not removed. Perhaps this is working as designed? which is okay - just means we should make sure we delete files that mezzemo has transcoded from within mezzmo.

That being said I don't like that I can't delete the file from within a folder in mezzmo (get an error that says cannot delete from playlist because it is dynamically built) - only way I could delete it was to go to the all files view in mezzmo (which was large) and find the file and delete there.

Hi Brian,

You are right - if you delete a file in Mezzmo, then the associated transcoded files are also deleted at the same time. If you delete the file using Windows Explorer, then Mezzmo knows nothing about this at the time. However, the next time you maintain your library (with the remove media checkbox turned on), the transcoded files should be cleaned up.

Deleting a file from a playlist and deleting a file from a folder in Mezzmo is a little different. Playlists are just collections of files that you have added into your Mezzmo library. Folders are direct representations of a folder on your computer. Even though you can delete the file in (say) "All Videos", then the next time you start Mezzmo and re-enter the folder in Mezzmo, the file will reappear since it it was found on your computer in that folder.

Let me know if you need further explanation.
