View Full Version : 2 New Devices from Syabas (Popcorn Hour) called PopBox 3D & PopBox V8

Greetings!

I took the plunge and decided to try the new Syabas (Popcorn Hour) devices introduced last year (2011) which are called PopBox 3D & PopBox V8. I bought the 3D version and it has been updated with the latest firmware (released early Dec 2011). The device saw Mezzmo exactly 1 time and nevermore.

Mezzmo sees the device but sees it either as a Generic Device, a plain old Popcorn Hour and once as a Popcorn Hour A110.

Syabas, or should I say the PopBox dev crew is scrambling all over the place to get this thing working stable, but I think it will be some time before they get the GUI and several other things to be at least on par with the regular Popcorn Hour devices.

It works just fine with a USB HD and even with a network share, although rather complicated in the way you must make it "see" the content before it will allow you to play it. It appears to work similar to a WDTV in that it needs to "inventory" the files before playing.

I'm hoping that a Mezzmo profile can be generated for these devices as they are about half the cost of a current Popcorn Hour and seem to work fine IF you could use it reliably with a DLNA server.

Does their format support differ to the older Popcorn devices? If it does, we can certainly create new profiles for them.

Do you have a reliable connection to the device, so that you could test the existing PCH profiles?

The GUI is certainly different... more like the new WDTV Live Ver 3 GUI. They store the database on a 2GB SDCard which can be upgraded for more space. Otherwise, the normal NFS share, SAMBA share and UPNP settings are all there as well, but differ in implementation.
When you scroll to a resource like SAMBA, it scans for any servers, same with NFS and UPNP.... As said above, Mezzmo sees the device based on MAC & IP, but selects a different (but mostly "Generic") profile after a clear in Mezzmo and reset of the device.
So I have no clear answer to the question... Popcorn profiles do not work, nor does the generic.

Mezzmo sees the device every time, but the device does NOT see Mezzmo. This is with both PCH profiles AND Generic. I'm willing to try any profiles you have to offer.

As mentioned, these are half or less than the cost of the regular PCH models, so they MAY become popular once they are noticed by the mainstream buyers. Might be worth picking up one to test as both the 3D and the V8 share the same basic firmware.

Ok, can you please enable logging (see this thread: http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread.php/419-FAQ-How-to-turn-on-diagnostic-logging) then restart one of the Popcorns and try to search for Mezzmo. Once that fails (give it a few seconds), stop the server and send in the logs to support. We'll start working on a new profile and see why it's failing to connect as well.

Sorry for the extra work.... and as a postscript, it appears the PCH A-210 is having the same issues with Mezzmo. I saw another post on the NMT forum regarding it from late December. Whether the user actually posted about it here is unknown. Thought it might shed a little more light?

Was there a solution for this? Often we hear the Mezzmo staff ask for logs, but never find out if a solution was ever found.

If you have one of the Popcorn media player models, then I suggest you try one of the Popcorn device profiles in Mezzmo. In Mezzmo, go to the Media Devices dialog to change your device profile. If that does not work, then please turn on logging (see http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread.php/419-FAQ-How-to-turn-on-diagnostic-logging). Restart your Mezzmo server and try connecting to Mezzmo using your Popcorn. Then browse some playlists and try playing a few files. When it fails, stop your Mezzmo server and exit Mezzmo. Zip up all the logs and send them to us at support [at] conceiva [dot] com.
