Some days I can play "x.AVI" but not "y.MP4" with srt subtitles.
If I stop, exit Mezzmo and restart, the situation may be reversed: I cannot open "x.AVI" but I can play "y.MP4."
If go through this once again, I can play both.
I am changing nothing between sessions.
Both formats consistently play fine on the PC through VLC, which uses ffmpeg.
Error log shows "Invalid and inefficient vfw-avi packed B frames detected" on failures.
Obvioulsy, consistentcy would be desirable.
Any clue what I can do to make this reliable?
Thank you.

Thanks for reporting this. It sounds like a problem that we need to investigate & fix. Can you help by sending us a set of logs? Turn on logging (see http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread.php/419-FAQ-How-to-turn-on-diagnostic-logging) and restart your Mezzmo server. Connect to Mezzmo server using your DLNA device. Reproduce the problem with "x.AVI", and then reproduce the problem with "y.MP4". Then, stop your Mezzmo server and exit Mezzmo. Zip up all logs and send them to us at support [at] conceiva [dot] com. Once we get your logs we'll analyze them and fix the problem.

In case anyone else needs a possible solution:
I had given my DLink DSM 520 to my sister. She likes Mezzmo so I set her up but got inconsistent transcoding. ["Cannot Open File."]
I finally noticed that TVeristy would randomly report the DSM 520 as DSM 320.
Not sure why that would be but I occurred to me that Mezzmo might be doing something similar.
I changed the Mezzmo setting from DSM 520 to DSM 320. [This plays on a non-HD TV, so HD is no issue.]
All files have now consistently transcoded.
