I'm ripping all my TV shows & such from DVD/BD to watch via Mezzmo on my PS3. I use either Handbrake or Nero Recode to do the ripping to MP4s. I can switch audio tracks but I can't access any of the subtitle tracks. What format would your recommend to use so that I can access all the audio & subtitle tracks?

I don't believe the PS3 supports streaming subtitles. I have tried it with Mezzmo, Tversity, PS3 Media Server and Nero Home. I finally ended up just reencoding and hardcoding the subs when necessary.

I don't know if the PS3 will support subtitles on an MP4. According to their manual (http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/video/index.html) it looks like they might support them on an M2TS container. I use DVDFAb and it supports remuxing subtitles into M2TS or a direct render into the video, as mentioned above. I don't have a PS3 but I find the direct render option the most universally supported, since it doesn't require the endpoint (in this case the PS3) to support the subtitle formats. DVDFab supports forced subtitles, which is very convenient.

The recent (1.60) release notes of PS3 Media Server mention this:
- Added support for VobSub (DVD) subtitles in MP4 container

Not sure if the subs are transcoded into the video on the fly or they're streamed but I'll check it out when I get home. That's exactly what I'm using currently (VobSub subs in an MP4) so I'm extremely curious.

Can you keep us updated with your results? We may be able to tweak the PS3 device profiles in Mezzmo to possibly support subtitles.

No luck with my MP4s. What device profile should my PS3 be using? It's an old 'fat' PS3 but without backward compatibility.

Try the 'Sony Playstation 3' device profile. Turn off transcoding (see Transcoding Settings dialog in Mezzmo) so that Mezzmo server streams the native MP4 file directly to your PS3. Let us know how it goes. If no success, then turn transcoding back on so you can watch all your other videos on your PS3.

When I use the 'Sony Playstation 3' device profile with transcoding turned off I get the 'unsupported data' message. Here's the FFmpeg info for the file I was using for the test:
