View Full Version : Video aspect 720 x 304 problems

Hi,

I have a number of mp4 videos in a video aspect 720 x 304 (very wide) and these are being transcoded to my Panasonic TX-P42V10B

The problem is the video is being squahed and i cannot alter the aspect settings on the TV when streaming. I cant tell quite what is happenning, the properties of the mpeg trascode output still shows as 720 x 304 but it isnt playable on the TV without the TV squashing the image. If i play the transcode file through DivX player on my pc the same problem occurs, the image is squashed, even if i widen the screen in Divx, its still squashed with black bars each side of the video.

Is there any solution?

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve,
you can try pre-transcoding the video to mpeg and this may force the video to 1920x1080, right-click on the file in Mezzmo and select 'Pre-transcode Files...' then check the box for your device and click 'Choose Formats...' then select mpeg and click 'OK' and then 'OK' again to begin pre-transcoding.

Hi Peter

Thanks for suggestion, sadly no joy, still plays incorrectly, both by PC and TV, tested with PC using windows MP & DivX player. With windows MP it see's it as wide screen but the image scrolls right to left, very odd. With DivX its the same as the TV, image distorted, not black bars top and bottom to make up for being wider than screen.

I manually converted the file using DivX Plus Converter and that streams and plays perfect, without transcode etc.

Then converted to mpeg 2 in SD using Xilisoft HD Video Converter and that had the same problem as ffmpeg, but then tried in HD output and bingo, its perfect and streams perfect.

Any suggestions why ffmpeg isnt converting to HD?

Attached are the 3 video file details i mention.

For info, i am using the Panasonic Viera (No MPEG-TS) Dennis sent me.

Cheers

Some devices handle mpeg files differently to other formats and will preserve the aspect ratio of mpeg video while stretching other formats to fit the screen. We can send you a device profile that will allow you to pre-transcode to avi if you send an email to support [at] conceiva [dot] com.

Hi Peter

I have tried the profile and no joy, in fact its far worse. My mkv files dont transcode now, and the tv doesnt support them, my manually created HD MPEG files start to play but are transcoded when the old profile simply streamed the file as it was not necessary. Play also stops after approx 1m. My DivX files seem to stream ok.

My 720 x 304 mp4 file doesnt transcode either, TV just reports its not supported.

The only positive is that the HD MPeg2 i created myself which gets transcoded and stops after 1m does at least appear to be the correct aspect. Just a sham transcoding wasnt necessary and the files that do require transcode, dont.

I then transcoded the file manually, chose the avi format, and this works great. But does this mean that when i wish to view a video in this format i need to manually switch profile from Panasonic Viera (No MPEG-TS) to the (2011) one, manually force transcode, view then switch back?

Hi Steve,
we have sent you another device profile to try, this one without MPEG-TS so it should work better.

Hi

Far better results this time but still a few problems, results of a few tests are.

1) AVI DivX file plays file.
2) MPeg2 files play fine.
3) My HD Mpeg2 file plays fine but is transcoded when it doesnt need to be, the other profile does not transcode. I have been deleting pre-transcoded file for each test to be 100% sure.
4) My mp4's transcode fine.
5) My MKV's transcode fine.
6) My 720 x 304 mp4 transcodes to MPEG2 but is still incorrect aspect.
7) If i manually attempt to transcode (6) to AVI i get a fail with this as a log

Hi Steve,
glad to hear the results are better, this file failed to transcode because it has 6 channel sound where mp3 only supports 2 channels, we have updated the device profile and you can download it from the same location as before. Please let us know how it goes.

Hi Peter

Thanks for the further update, when I now manually transcode the file it plays fine.

So I have just a couple of questions, sorry.

1) Could it not detect when transcoding to an AVI file is necessary due to the aspect of the original, to avoid having to manually transcode, but if it did would i have to revert to 2 channels of audio? I so ....
2) Can it not transcode to AVI Mpeg4 & 6 Channels of audio when required rather than dropping to 2 channels, i can see these are options for ffmpeg, although have not been able to make it work?
I know for example a video with the attributes below streams perfectly with 6 channes, my surround system linked via optical correctly detects and shows surround sound available etc:

Stream #0:0: Video: mpeg4 (Simple Profile) (XVID / 0x44495658), yuv420p, 640x352 [SAR 1:1 DAR 20:11], 23.98 tbr, 23.98 tbn, 23.98 tbc
Stream #0:1: Audio: ac3 ([0] [0][0] / 0x2000), 48000 Hz, 5.1(side), s16, 384 kb/s

Also when mezzmo transcodes my mkv files with 6 channels into mpeg it keeps the 6 channels, rather than converting to avi, but again if the aspect is wide, its not correctly displayed by the tv, could it not do this but for the correct resolution in MPEG2, the current output is ...

Hi Steve,
we have updated the device profile to add AC3 encoding for the AVI container, you can try pre-transcoding with this audio to see if you get the 6 channel sound played correctly. Download the updated profile from the same location as before.

AVI cannot be used as a container for transcoding on the fly because of the index created at the end of the AVI file, players need to read this in order to play the file so the file cannot be streamed until transcoding is completed.

If you can post the information of the HD mpeg2 files that are transcoded but do not need to be, we can updated the device profile to get them to play natively.

This video was the 720 x 304 aspect that plays correctly as as MPEG, streams without transcode on the "No TS" profile but transcodes with the "2009" profile. If this didnt transcode at least i can stick with the 2009 profile.

Thanks for your help so far, i am trying to get to grips with ffmpeg to see if i can successfully get 6 channels but my knowlegd is 0% at the moment,

Hi Paul

Just a bit more info, may help on the avi/ac3 problem. To do a simple test I took a working avi 6 channel file and forced a transcode to what should be the same, but the resulting transcode using your new ac3 option shows with no audio on the TV, the ffmpeg info is ...

This is the file that doesnt work, taken from a transcoded file back in as a normal library entry.

The only two differences i can see are the bit rate is 2551 vs 2555 and probably the significant difference is the working one is xVid and the one without sound is DivX.

Hi Steve,
we have updated the Panasonic Viera (2009 Models) profile so that your mpeg2 file will play natively and the avi encoding will use the XVID codec tag instead of divx, download the updated profile from the same location as before (there are two files in the zip that you need to extract to your device profiles folder).

Hi Paul,

The mpeg now plays native so that's a result. Still no joy with avi, the aspect is fine but no audio indicated by tv, speaker symbol crossed out. there still seems to be differences in the audio settings, not sure if it's the Mode extension : CM (complete main) or Format settings, Endianness : Big, the audio codec or interleaved settings.

Would it be possible for the mpeg option to force the aspect and pad the video instead? Would that mean it could stream and transcode at the same time?

Cheers

Hi Steve,
we have just released Mezzmo 3.0 which has a modified Panasonic Viera (2009 Models) profile for you to try, please try updating and then pre-transcode your file to avi and see if the audio and video play.

It is possible to adjust the device profile so that the video is transcoded while maintaining the aspect ratio by padding the video with black bars, this might still be fast enough for transcoding on the fly, please try Mezzmo 3.0 and if the avi pre-transcode does not work we can send you an updated profile that will pad the mpeg video.

Hi Paul, updated to 3 and retested. All normal native playback ok inc. my "hd mped". Transcode on the fly all working but aspects still not fixed when source is not 16:9 most obvious with original post but also with my 1920:1040 which I have quite a few mp4's and mkv's.

I think ffmpeg and ac3 5.1 is not going to work, it now refuses to play completely, either ac3 or mp3. I'm guessing it's the codec again and there seems to be an old problem with ffmpeg and the audio codec not being 2000 but 00001000-0000-0020-8000-00AA00389B71 instead which does seem to be a topic of complaint with ffmpeg. It seems some players are fine, some are not with my tv the latter.

So can we try padding to 16:9 with mpeg?

Cheers and thanks again

Steve

Hi Paul,

I realise you must be very busy what with a new release etc but is there any chance of a profile to try to pad the video. I have tried myself using ffmpeg to manually scale up and pad with partial success (worked padding avi but not mkv & mp4) but i would prefer not to have to re-scale and pad my videos before i add then to my library for obvious reasons.

Cheers

Hi Steve,

Sorry for not getting back to you as yet. Please send a new email to us at support [at] conceiva [dot] com and we'll provide a device profile with padding enabled.

Hi Paul

Thanks for the new profile, some good news, some not so good. Firstly a success, my 720x304 file now looks great with black bars top and bottom.

Sadly my celebrations were slightly too soon, i have now noticed my mkv files which are 1280x720 now appear with black bars top bottom, left and right in a small window in the centre of the screen which is very odd.

Also i have some videos that are 1280 x 528 (mkv) and they also exhibit the same problem.

Lastly i have a few 1920 x 1040 mp4's and they are not getting any padding top or bottom, although the distortion is small its still noticable.

Any ideas?

Lastly and not really related but i noticed it whilst testing different files, i added height and width columns on the details view and there are not details shown, any ideas why, they show in the property windows which is what i am using to pick test files.

Thanks again.

Hi Steve,

We've sent you a new device profile to try. Let us know how you go.

Regarding the height and width in Details view, I just added these columns in Details view and they display fine. Can you email us a screenshot of what you mean to support [at] conceiva [dot] com? That will help us understand the problem.

Hi Paul

Thanks for the latest proile, its almost perfect, files play fine now apart from the few i have that are 1920 x 1040 mp4's as they are still not getting any padding top or bottom. Is seems lower definition seem to work ok but when the scale goes to 1920 x ??? it stops working correctly.

You should have the screen shot via emai.

Thanks

Hi Steve,

Glad it's (mostly) working now. We reproduced the padding issue with 1920x1040. We'll fix it and report back once complete.

Hi Paul,

Success with my height and width problem, i updated my library completly but no change, so i thought i would cycle through the view options, small icon, etc just in case any of them displayed attributes, they didnt but when i cycled through to detais, hey presto my dimentions were displayed (less larger seems to be working as well).

Problem i have now is my TV series has gone slightly mad, they seem to be all part recognosed, think it because some are xxxxx.S01E01...... and some are xxxxxx S01E01....... and it only likes the spaces between name and series details, bulk renamer now being checked out.

Anyway, library all good.

Cheers

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the tip about the Details view. We'll check that out & make sure Width & Height is always displayed.

Regarding your filenames not being added into TV series correctly, please post an example filename that worked and one that did not work. We'll adjust our parser to accommodate both styles.

Hi Paul

This one didn't work

Bones.S05E06.The.Tough.Man.in.the.Tender.Chicken.a vi

But after simply removing the first full stop it does, like this

Bones S05E06.The.Tough.Man.in.the.Tender.Chicken.avi

Can you tell me what the criteria is that mezzmo uses to determin its a TV episode. Before i refreshed my whole db i had every film listed as well as TV series. Since i refreshed i have just TV episodes and 1 random film. The film seems to be there because of some dodgy metadata so its no problem i just manually removed the series name.

Cheers

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the examples. Both example filenames worked for us (i.e. "Bones.S05E06.The.Tough.Man.in.the.Tender.Chicken.a vi" and "Bones S05E06.The.Tough.Man.in.the.Tender.Chicken.avi"). They both added Bones series, Season 5, Episode 6 (The Tough Man in the Tender Chicken) into our Mezzmo library. Perhaps you have an associated "Bones.S05E06.The.Tough.Man.in.the.Tender.Chicken.x ml/nfo/tgmd" file(s) that Mezzmo is also finding?

Hi Paul

I re-tested and it worked for me as well, i have no idea why, i think before (although i cant say for sure) for some reason it had picked up season and episode but not translated the episode names for all files. I had spotted that for some reason it almost looked like it was case sensetive but i cant make it happen again, seems to have not gone well when i upgraded but since i have re-created all my files with a new name an refreshed the library completly, all seems well.

I have noticed the Series Active Playlist is case sensitive, i.e. i ended up for example with a ncis and an NCIS series even though they get correctly picked up as far as episode name, artwork etc, they ended up plit up.

Any news on the 1920 x 1040 padding, i have tried myself with ffmpeg and no success, i did manage results with lower resolutions but for some reason 1920 x anthing seems to play up.

Hi Steve,

Let us know if you can repeat the season/episode pick-up problem and we'll investigate further. Regarding 'NCIS' and 'ncis', we'll look into case sensitivity and fix that up. For now you can change the Series name in the video's Properties dialog and the two Series will merge into one.

We reproduced the padding issue here and it seems to be an ffmpeg.exe issue. We will build a new ffmpeg.exe and see if that helps.

Hi Paul

I have recently updated mezzmo (3.1.1.0) and have checked my on going problems and they still seem to be there, both the 1920 x ??? ffmpeg issue, case sensitivity in playlists and missing metadata.

With the metadata problem its still the episode names / titles. After the update I thought I would go for a complete Library Maint and Mezzmo to update all info. Sadly this was not a good idea.

What was updated does not seem to make sense. I still have case sensitive problems but also I have what appears to be duplicate active folders of which I cant remove because they are active, with the old case problem, see example 1 where even the properties show the series name to be with capitals but in the active folder view they are lowercase (example 1) and I have a folder of similar named files, some where the episode name is picked up and some not (see example 2) even though the series and episode numbers are updated ok.

One more minor odd error is the sequence of the display of episodes shows in the examples of running low to high but it is the other way around, I have to press the sort twice to fix.

I am missing now more titles missing than I have correct.

Would I be best completely starting my library again or am I doing something wrong or expecting more than I can get.

If you would prefer me to start these problems in new threads let me know, I am happy to do what you need me to do.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. We've reproduced a few of the issues and have fixed them for the upcoming release - hopefully due next week.

If you wish, you can remove the active playlist from your Mezzmo libray and add it in again. This should remove the duplicate active playlist folders.

Regarding the missing episodes names, I just added a video file with the same "Bones S07E13.HDTV.x264-LOL" file name and it worked fine (i.e. the title was "The Past in the Present"). My guess is that the TheTVDB.com web site was either down or not responding correctly whilst you were adding your files so Mezzmo had no choice but to revert the original filename as the title. The season and episode were extracted from the filename.

Hi Peter

I have now updated to the latest version and can see some fixes. The sort sequence seems to have been fixed but I still have case problems and unfound metadata.

See the example attached, I now seem to be getting both and upper and lower case entries in the active playlists and I cant delete the lower case one, see error on the example.

I maintained my whole library again replacing all metadata, also deleted the whole active play list and re-created.

I still also have missing episode names, with no pattern to why I have some files ok and some not.

On the aspect problem where we started from al is so much better, the only thing I cant understand is a mp4 file I have which is 800 x 1920 looks great with large blank bars top and bottom but a mp4 1040 x 1920 has no thin black bars top and bottom still.

To get over my library wows should I try to re-create my library from scratch, if so how?

Could / is there an option to update all meta data in a folder and replace missing info and by missing info, treat the "episode name = file name" as missing data?

Cheers

Hi Steve,

Email us at support [at] conceiva [dot] com and we'll provide a patch that will merge the mixed case active playlists. Once you get that patch, you can run Maintain Library to fix up the active playlist duplication.

If you want to maintain a set of files in a playlist or folder, then right-click on the folder or playlist in the Mezzmo tree on the left and click Maintain Playlist.

Hi Paul

Have tried to maintain library and no change, still have duplicates in series active list.

I also created a new active list by series and season and that also contains case sensitive duplicates.

Ps: is the problem with ffmpeg meant to be fixed when padding x 1920 files

Hi Paul,

Something has happened which I have not spotted before since I last updated Mezzmo from the last patch, although I cant say for sure its not just because I am streaming a new set of files.

I spotted the stream ended a few mins short from the end of the video, the TV reported "Cannot read file".

I checked my pc and found the transcoded file and played (through mezzmo right click etc) and it played to the end fine.

So I though, I know I will turn logging on so I did, last night.

This evening I spotted my pc had run out of disk space on C, just assumed I had filled it up from a download or something, then I started to stream a file, all ok, stream the next and it stopped just before the end.

So I checked the logs (see attached) and spotted that one log (mezzmomediaservice) was 114GB!

I have not attached the 114GB file but managed to load it though a hex editor and cut out the end which is much the same all the way through.

any help would be appreciated. Again if you would like me to raise as a new thread just ask and I will do so.

This may be something to do with the logs but for the first time even, when I tried to disable logging it gave me an error saying it could not stop the service, but did so anyway (after a long pause and mezzo not responding)

Thanks

Steve

Paul

Any chance you have been able to either sort out the correct patch, or if the new release mentioned on Facebook contains this, any change of getting that?

Also the problem of streams finishing a couple of mins before the end of the video is still happening, same errors like in the above logs (not that I can keep logging for long)

Hi Steve,

The upcoming release should have fixes for several of your problems - i.e. duplicate active playlists & finishing a couple of mins before the end of the video. We're planning to release it hopefully in a few days. Thanks for your patience.

Hi Steve,

The current release is Mezzmo v3.2.0.0. We're just finishing Mezzmo v3.3.0.0 now and hope to release it later this week.
