.xml data..... Automatically detects and extracts for files.... I give up. How?

I have .xml files for most of my media files, all with the same name as the video file they are related to. If Mezzmo is supposed to identify and extract the data for these files, why can I not get it to do it? I have messed with the Metadata Retrieval Settings and <Maintain Library> dozens of times but I have yet to see a video file import the data from the accompanying .xml file. What am I doing wrong?
