View Full Version : Certain MKV's wont play on my LG Smart TV?

I'm trying out Mezzmo with my LG 42LN5700 Smart TV. I was planning on purchasing this but I have run into issues. Most videos play with no issues (AVI, ISO, MP4, etc.) and for the most part MKV's work fine also. It seems that MKV's with DTS audio will not play? I click the video on my LG TV and it says "Format not supported" and then it asks me if I'd like to play the next video in line. I don't understand why it's not transcoding properly? It's trying to transcode the audio to AC3 I believe. I can play 10gb MKV with no issues then I can try and play a 3GB MKV and it won't play. I right click on the video and click on the transcoding tab, here is what I see:

Here are some FFmpeg infos from 2 different MKV movies that would not play for me:

Thanks for the detailed information. There must be an attribute in the transcoded file that your TV model does not like. Please go back to the Transcoding tab on the Properties dialog and select the transcoded file listed there. Then click the 'Get FFmpeg Information' button and post that information here for us to check.

It's very strange, sometimes the MKV that is in question will play and sometimes it won't play. It's a hit or miss really. Like yesterday I got the error "Format not supported" and then today the video played.

I'm also having trouble with subtitles. Some movies allow me use them and some don't. The movie I played today using my WDTV streaming media player (on my Plasma TV) allowed me to use subtitles for the movie, it had 5 languages to choose from. When I tried playing the same movie with Mezzmo (streaming the movie from my PC to my LG TV) I couldn't use any subtitles, everything was grayed out.

The problem may be the high video bitrate (7MB/sec) in the transcoded file. Try this: Go to the Media Devices dialog and edit your device, On the Device Settings dialog to the Performance tab and move the Video bitrate slider halfway. Click OK to save your changes. Now pre-transcode the video again. This time, Mezzmo will create a transcoded video with a lower video bitrate and this may play fine. Let us know how it goes.

Regarding subtitles, for the movie you mention, right-click on the video in Mezzmo and click Properties. On the Properties dialog, go to the Subtitles tab and make sure you see your external or embedded subtitles listed there. If you do not, then click 'Update Subtitles'. Also, go to the Media devices dialog and edit your device. On the Device Settings dialog, go to the Subtitles tab and make sure you have streaming external, embedded and burnt subtitles checkboxes turned on. For more information about subtitles, see this FAQ - http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread.php/5977-Tutorial-Subtitling-Basics

- Why does it matter what the bitrate is? I've streamed the same movie and numerous similar movies to my WDTV player with no issues (using Windows Shares). I've streamed 14GB MKV movies over WiFi with no problems. I received an email on the 23rd;

This problem is due to the way the LG TV reads transcoded files, it does a request for bytes beyond the available transcoded data and Mezzmo cannot complete this request so the device aborts. To resolve this you can try pre-transcoding the file or try editing the device profile in a text editor, look for understandsinvalidrange="0" and change it to understandsinvalidrange="1". After editing the device profile you will need to restart your Mezzmo media server. The device profile will be in your device profiles folder (see this thread for its location: http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread.php/467-FAQ-Where-are-device-profiles-located) named LGTV.prf, LGTV2012.prf or LGTV2013.prf.

Over the Christmas/New Year break our email support will be closed so during this time you can get assistance by posting on our forum http://forum.conceiva.com.

Best regards

Peter

- I changed the the understandsinvalidrange="0" to understandsinvalidrange="1" what was this suppose to do? I even moved the Performance slider down on my LG TV in the settings of Mezzmo like you said.

- About the subtitles, it's strange that some movies work still and some dont. I made sure everything was checked like you said. But for example Closed Circuit will not let me turn the subtitles off. It plays English subs for the entire movie even the English speaking parts. Screenshot attached.

- Why does it matter what the bitrate is?

Many devices are sensitive to audio and video bitrates. We know from experience that many devices will refuse to play files if the audio or video bitrates are too high. In your case, it may not be the bitrate - I was suggesting it may be one of the causes and it was something to check.

I've streamed the same movie and numerous similar movies to my WDTV player with no issues (using Windows Shares). I've streamed 14GB MKV movies over WiFi with no problems.

Your WD TV Live and LG TV have completely different firmware (i.e. different decoders and renderers inside them) so that fact that your WD TV Live can play your files does not tell you that your LG TV should/will also play them.

Did you delete your transcoded files and then pre-transcode the file after moving the slider? After pre-transcoding has completed, does the video play OK on your TV?

For Closed Circuit, if you don't want to see subtitles, then check if you can turn subtitles off using your TV's remote control. When the video is playing, press the Tools or Options or Settings button on your TV's remote control to see if there are subtitle settings. Most TV's let you turn them off. If you cannot, then on the Subtitles tab of the Properties dialog, uncheck all the subtitles listed and then delete your transcoded files and try streaming the video again.

I dont even know what your talking about? All I did was change that line I posted above. I've never pre-transcoded a file or deleted anything. I pretty much have left the settings as is.

Yeah, my LG Smart TV has that option but not for this movie. On other movies, I've been able to turn off subs using the remote.

One more thing. When I stream a movie from my PC to LG TV and the video gets an error, for example "File not supported" or even if I just want to check the videos process, where do I find the log that tells me why it didn't play, etc.? I tried playing an mp4 movie but it kept saying not supported. For the most part like I've said throughout this thread Mezzmo works great! But here and there I get videos that give me hard time. Here is mediainfo of the latest.

Regarding pre-transcoding an MKV that does not play on your LG TV, I'll try to explain the steps to pre-transcode a file in more detail:

Go to the Media Devices dialog and edit your LG TV device listed there.
On the Device Settings dialog, go to the Performance tab and move the Video bitrate slider halfway.
Next, go to the Transcoding tab on the Device Settings dialog, and delete all your transcoded files. Click OK to save your changes.
Now pre-transcode the video. Right-click on the MKV video in Mezzmo and click 'Pre-transcode Files'.
On the 'Pre-transcode Files' dialog, select your device and click 'Choose Formats'.
On the Pre-Transcode Formats dialog, select the bolded format and click OK.
On the Pre-transcode Files dialog, select the 'Pre-transcode files even if they match your devices supported formats' checkbox.
Click OK and the file will start transcoding. Wait until it has completed transcoding and then try streaming it your TV.

Let us know if that streams better.

Regarding why a file does not play, there's no information supplied from your LG TV to Mezzmo why a files does not play. We have to assume that the format or attributes of that particular file are not supported by your TV. When this occurs, you can pre-transcode your file using the above steps to get it into a compatible format so it can play. Also, you can tell us the FFmpeg information of the files that do not play, and we may be able to tweak the device profile so that these files are transcoded into a compatible format rather than streamed directly to your TV. To get the FFmpeg information, right-click on the file in Mezzmo and click 'Get FFmpeg Information'.

I had to extend my trial period for the extra 15 days due to all my issues. I took some screenshot for you to show what I'm talking about. Anways, I did move the slider, I deleted all transcoded files, etc. Also, you said "We have to assume that the format or attributes of that particular file are not supported by your TV." Like I said, I have no issues with Brett-PC when streaming videos. I can stream the same video with Mezzmo and it wont work. That is probably due to that fact that the video has that "TC" tag next to the file name. Read below for more information. If I can fix these subtitles issues and this strange "TC" issue I'd purchase the software. I only have 9 or 10 days left of trial.

636 On my LG smart TV, these are my streaming options shown in the screenshot. Mezzmo or my PC(Brett-PC) as a DLNA server usually has been reliable.

637 If you notice, a few of the movies have a "TC" at the end of the name, I boxed them in red for you. I don't know what TC means but it wasn't part of the original file name. Whenever I try and play a video that has that TC attached to it, the video will not stream or play. If it doesn't have TC on it will play find. I downloaded a movie the other day, both where 1080p. One had TC and one didn't. If I can fix this TC issue I can stream without any problems.

638 Now issues with subtitles. This screenshot above shows that subtitles are working. I was playing Captain Phillips. I put the video in the Mezzmo folder and I also put a copy in the Brett-PC folder, I was going to try 2 DLNA servers using the same movie. The movie has embedded subs, there wasn't ant .srt file with the video. Anyways, I'm unable to change the subs on this movie using Mezzmo, nothing works.

639 When I used the other DLNA server, Brett-PC aka my home computer, it gave me the option to turn on/off the subs, choose a different language, etc. I dont know Mezzmo wont allow me to change the subs but my PC will?

Thanks for the continuing help, you guys are awesome, customer service is great.

Hi budmonster,

Thanks for the excellent explanation & screenshots.

The "TC" suffix on some of your titles could be being added by Mezzmo server. Check this: In Mezzmo, go to the Options dialog (Logging page) and check if the "Add text to title when a file requires transcoding" checkbox is selected. If selected and the text is "TC", then this explains the TC suffix.

Please email us at support [at] conceiva [dot] com and we'll provide an updated LG TV device profile to try. In your email, please includes the FFmpeg information for the downloaded 1080p video that played OK, the downloaded 1080p video that did not play OK and the Captain Philips video that had no subtitles when streaming with Mezzmo. To get the FFmpeg information, right-click on each video in Mezzmo and click 'Get FFmpeg Information'.

I have only 1 day left on my extended trial and I wont be home tonight. Thanks for the help though it was greatly appreciate. I might purchase it but for $30, that's a gamble right now as I can't get all the kinks out.

There is a nice 30% discount available at the moment (until end of January) so that may help - see http://www.conceiva.com/buy/specialoffers.asp. Also, we'll continue to work with you to iron out those kinks and get you up and running :)
