Embedded subtitles not working - LG Bluray

Hello,

I recently purchased Mezzmo, and it is mostly great. However, I am unable to get embedded subtitles working on my LG BD390 bluray player. Embedded subs work fine from Mezzmo to my Panasonic TV, but not to my LG bluray player. I know that the LG BD390 can read embedded subs in my MKV files, because it works fine when I play the MKV from a USB memory stick. So the bluray player is capable of playing embedded subtitles. It just doesn't work from Mezzmo. External subtitles do work, though. But I hate having to extract subtitles on every MKV I have. I have tried using several different device profiles, and I have tried modifying the LG Bluray profile many different ways. Nothing seems to work. I have turned on logging and studied the logs to try and figure this out, but still no joy. Please help. Thank you!

I don't know what ripping software you use but DVDfab has a couple of options, direct render to video and only display forced subtitles, which allow the subtitles to be ripped into the video stream and will be displayed on all devices. The downside is if you have something where you want to turn off/on subtitles then this won't work. But if it is a situation where it's a foreign language and the DVD/Blu-Ray has a forced subtitle track of just the foreign language spots then this can work well as a solution. Of course if you've already ripped the content and have external subtitle tracks, this won't help either. I moved to it for all of my rips over a year ago. I no lonegr struggle with different end point streaming devices/software having different subtitle support.

OK. Mezzmo has the same functionality with the Burn subtitles into video file functionality. This is under the device settings. I've never used it but it looks like you need to specify the languages you want it to render into the video stream. Have you tried turning this feature on and then adding the specific language and container format ? I have also seen where many streamer devices will act one way for local content and act differently for DLNA/uPNP content. Have you messed with the subtitles settings tab for your LG Blu-Ray player in Mezzmo ? If so, what are the current settings ?

Those are my settings on the LG Bluray device in Mezzmo. I basically have all or most video containers and subtitle formats enabled.

Please post the FFmpeg information for one of the MKV videos that has embedded subtitles. Right-click on the video in Mezzmo and click 'Get FFmpeg Information'.

(Also, even though you can play a certain file via USB or see subtitles when playing a certain file via USB, this does not necessarily mean you can do the same via DLNA streaming. We've found that quite a few devices have different code & capabilities in their firmware for USB playback and DLNA playback).

Thanks for the FFmpeg information. The file looks fine. Mezzmo streaming this MKV file directly to your LG Blu-ray player without any changes. If you cannot turn on subtitles or see them, then this is a limitation of the LG Blu-ray player's firmware when streaming MKV video via DLNA.

What about enabling the burn subtitles into video option if the Blu-Ray player won't display the subtitle track properly ? I thought that is what the option is for ?

Yes - if djensen22 turns back on the "Burn subtitles into video files" checkbox for his device, then Mezzmo will transcode & burn the subtitles into the video.

Thank you for the responses. I guess the LG BD390 must not support embedded subtitles over DLNA. I will confirm that with LG support. In the mean time, it looks like I will just need to extract the subtitles from the MKV and allow Mezzmo to stream them externally.

The option to transcode and burn the subtitles into the video is not very appealing to me, because I want to be able to turn the subs on or off at will. So extracting them and streaming them externally is probably the best option for me.
