Hi

I am running Mezzmo on a Win7 64bit VM and a USB drive attached. The drive normally takes a few seconds to resume from sleep but Mezzmo doesn not seem to like this.
When I connect to Mezzmo from my Samsung TVs and then browse the Media folder, I can see the drive resume from sleep in Windows but Mezzmo does not wait long enough to pull a listing of the media files and throws up a disconnect error. If Mezzmo waited just a few more seconds, it would not be an issue. If this something that can be resolved in mezzmo/windows? I am considering purchasing a SSD to speed up the 'resume' time, but this is a very expensive option.

PS. I do not want to disable USB sleep because the drive is mostly not in use and I want to prolong the life of it by not having it on all of the time.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Michael

Hi Michael,

The problem is not with Mezzmo but with your Samsung TV. Samsung TVs (and BDPs) are very time sensitive and if a media server (e.g. Mezzmo) does not respond within a certain (short) time period, then your Samsung device will display the dreaded "disconnect" error. Mezzmo does not time out waiting for your hard disk - it waits until your drive is spinning to get the required information. However, your TV does not wait and quickly times out in the meantime. So your desire to sleep your hard disk does not mix well with the DLNA streaming characteristics/oddities of your Samsung TV. In our experience, this timeout problem is isolated to just Samsung devices - we have not seen it with devices from other manufacturers.

Yes, I just realsied this. I have 2 Samsung Tv's. 1 from 2011 and another from last year. The newer model behaves better with HDDs in sleep mode, the other just disconnects. Thank you for the thorough explanation.

Hope I'm not stealing this thread but the topic got my attention:

I know browsing folders in mezzmo will spin up the drive to look if there are new files inside etc... Would it be possible to add a config-switch to prevent mezzmo from spinning up disks by browsing the folder unless you trigger a database maintenance or start actually playing a movie? Reason behind this is mezzmo is spinning up all my drives over and over again while having all needed information in the database...

Hi Peter,

By design, Mezzmo only accesses your hard disks when browsing folders or actually streaming files. When you browse playlists, all information is coming from your Mezzmo library (i.e. your Mezzmo database) and no direct disk access to the files is required. When browsing folders, Mezzmo must read the list of files from the folder on disk since they are truly dynamic and Mezzmo needs to check that the files in the folder have not been changed (i.e. new files/sub-folders, removed files/sub-folders, etc.). So Mezzmo is designed to access your disks only when absolutely necessary.
