View Full Version : Transcoding of .ISO -> Chromecast not full screen?

Hi there!

Love Mezzmo and just picked up a Chromecast. I'm trying to cast my DVD .ISO images from my PC (running the latest build of Mezzmo) to the Chromecast. Through the GUI, I've been able to select the Chromecast profile and I can see it begin to transcode as expected. However, it's not filling up the entire screen:

http://img674.imageshack.us/img674/8471/ZKdCxt.jpg (http://imageshack.com/i/iqZKdCxtj)
http://img901.imageshack.us/img901/7679/cDKXX0.jpg (http://imageshack.com/i/p1cDKXX0j)
http://img906.imageshack.us/img906/4244/O7o9fB.jpg (http://imageshack.com/i/p6O7o9fBj)

Using a 52" Sony Bravia XBR4. I've tried pre-transcoding and changing the aspect option (square pixels) in the GUI, but no matter what .ISO I throw at it, it doesn't expand to full screen.

Thoughts?

I just streamed a few DVD ISOs to a Chromecast and they are all played full screen on the TV. Perhaps there is a screen size setting on your TV that you need to adjust. When the DVD ISO is streaming via your Chromecast, press the Options or Tools button your TV's remote control and see if you can adjust the screen, view or zoom mode for that particular HDMI port being used by your Chromecast dongle.

I can certainly take a look. What's odd though is that the gray Mezzo screen with logo and loading screen is the full 1080p resolution. Perhaps there is a setting to expand the 480p DVD resolution for that particular port though. I'll look and get back to you.

Thanks!

As I mentioned earlier, the gray Mezzmo splash screen and loading screens for the .ISOs are in the correct aspect ratio and resolution (the TV's native interface shows 16:9 & 1080p). However as soon as the movie starts playing on the Chromecast (and transcoding on the PC running the Mezzmo server), the movie only displays in the middle of the screen as shown above. However, the native TV interface still shows 16:9 & 1080p when I press the display button on the remote.

All HDMI inputs are set up the same way on the TV, one of them is connected to my HD DirectTV receiver and the other goes to a DVD Player (which upscales fine). The other odd thing is that if I transcode the video from .ISO to MP4 or MKV, the file plays correctly in the correct aspect ratio and full screen.

Any further thoughts?

Thanks for the additional information. Right-click on one of the ISO videos in Mezzmo and click 'Get FFmpeg Information'. Post that information here or email it to us at support [at] conceiva [dot] com. Next, right-click again on the video and click Properties. On the Properties dialog, go to the Transcoding tab and select the transcoded file that you streamed to your Chromecast. Click the 'Get FFmpeg Information' button and also provide this information. Do this for the auto-transcoded file and the pre-transcoded file.

Sure thing..

Right-click on one of the ISO videos in Mezzmo and click 'Get FFmpeg Information'.

Thanks. Go back to the Transcoding tab on the Properties dialog and delete all the transcoded files for the DVD ISO video. Now go to the Media Devices dialog and edit your Chromecast device. On the Device Settings dialog, go to the Performance tab and change the "Adjust video aspect ratio with square pixels" checkbox (i.e. if checked, then change to unchecked, or if unchecked, change to checked). Save you changes and then try streaming the DVD ISO video again. If no success, then post the FFmpeg information for the transcoded file.

Thanks for your quick response. The option was checked (forced to always transcode). I deleted the transcoded files, unchecked this option and let it auto-encode again. Same results - the picture is centered in the middle of the screen and now the image looks stretched vertically like the aspect ratio is off. Here's the ffmpeg output.

Thanks. It appears your Chromecast is struggling with VP8 video. We just re-tested our Chromecast here and it is fine. What firmware version is your Chromecast running?

Interesting. Firmware looks like 17977.

Same firmware as ours . If you have another TV, try connecting it to another TV and try streaming the same ISO video. If the same result, maybe try factory resetting your Chromecast dongle & see if that helps.

Strange indeed. I know the firmware was updated pretty much as soon as I plugged it in. I'll try another set in the house (a Samsung) and if it still doesn't work I'll try a factory reset. Thanks for taking the time to look into this with me. Greatly appreciated.

OK - let us know you go.

Alright.. so I plugged the Chromecast into a different HDMI port on the Bravia - same result. I then did the factory reset, and put it back on the wireless network etc and plugged it back into the HDMI port - still the same issue. I then connected it to a smaller 720P Samsung LCD upstairs... and... same thing - the picture is still in the middle of the screen.

Thanks for the testing feedback. Right-click on the video in Mezzmo and click Properties. On the Properties dialog, go to the Transcoding tab and select the transcoded file that does not play full screen. Click "Save As" and save the file to disk. Then, add this saved file into your Mezzmo library and try streaming it to your Chromecast. Does it play full screen or smaller size? If smaller size, then please upload it to a filesharing site like OneDrive, Google Drive, mega.co.nz, Dropbox, etc. and email the download link to us at support [at] conceiva [dot] com. You might as well upload the .ISO as well so we can test this ourselves with our Chromecast.

I saved the file to my library, tried streaming it and it's the same story unfortunately. I also tried playing the resulting file in VLC and I can see the same issue. I'm uploading the ~800MB file now to my OneDrive and will send a link shortly.

Thanks - we'll download the test video and reproduce the problem here. We'll respond via email shortly.

Many thanks for uploading movie files for verification. Looks like the video source has been ripped with confusing settings, as: 720 x 480 SAR=8:9 DAR=4:3
what is actually 4:3 standard, however the internal video frame aspect ratio is different (like for 16:9). Many devices, including VLC player are able to detect that and display it as 16:9. Valid video for 16:9 should have something like: 720 x 480 SAR=32:27 DAR=16:9.
In the coming soon Mezzmo update, we will offer a procedure to allow user to pre-transcode such video files with scale fix 4:3 to 16:9.
