Bitstreaming from Mezzmo to Panasonic Blu Ray to Yamaha AVR

I have started a separate thread on this topic so as to ensure there is no obfuscation of messaging. Moderators, please feel free to delete my post in my other thread.

I have a question on bitstreaming files using Mezzmo. Let's assume I have a Blu ray rip / movie file on my computer running Mezzmo. I would be streaming the files to my Panasonic Blu-ray player (DMP-BDT230) and then on to my Yamaha RXV-475 AVR, to which my Sony TV is connected. I DO NOT want any audio processing to be done by Mezzmo OR my Blu ray player (which is already set to bit stream signals to my AVR). In other words, unless a file is transcoded, all video and audio info should be passed through to my AVR without any processing. Is this how Mezzmo works by default or should a specific setting be enabled at the Mezzmo end to achieve this?

If no transcoding is occurring then Mezzmo is simply streaming the file to you. You can disable transcoding for your Panasonic Blu-Ray player. I do the same except I use a WD Live and bitstream to my Yamaha RX-A3020.

So is it safe to assume that the audio quality of a non-transcoded streamed file coming out of my AVR's speakers would be comparable to a DVD with the file burnt into it and played through my Blu ray player?

I am okay with any processing at the Mezzmo end IF transcoding is occuring. My Panasonic does not play .avi files and some other formats. Since I have a large collection of video files in varied formats, I am not keen on disabling transcoding.

If you are bitstreaming then the answer to your question lies in how you ripped the file from the DVD. If you ripped the file as-is and your ripping software didn't alter it, then it should be as it was on the DVD. My ripping software has a passthrough mode which means it doesn't alter any of the video or audio and just rips it into the container format I chose. I use m2ts for all of my rips. Others have different preferences such as MKV etc... The key is to look-up what formats your Blu-Ray player supports and ensure you rip the DVD into a supported format. That would allow you to transcode non-DVD ripped files and have the DVD ripped files play natively. You could convert your large video collection into a supported container format. There is software out there that will help with bulk conversions but it could take some time since this often requires a bit of CPU processing power, depending on the source/destination formats. I personally bite the bullet and convert everything to m2ts, including my own videos.

Thanks again. I guess I did not make myself very clear in the previous post. Lets assume I have a 1080p movie file of 2GB on my computer running Mezzmo and the file format is supported by my Blu ray player.

Scenario 1: I stream this 2GB file to my Blu ray player and then to my AVR
Scenario 2: I burn the SAME 2GB file on to a DVD and play it through my Blu ray player

Would the video and audio quality be the same for the two scnearios? I understand that the pass through mode in your ripping software ensures virtually the same quality as in the DVD.

By the way, what ripping software do you use? Is handbrake a good option?

Yes - the audio and video quality would be the same. Note that DLNA devices' firmware can often have different engines within them for playing files via DLNA and via USB/CD/DVD/direct play - so this could be a source for some playback differences.

I use DVDFab. Many here use Handbrake and could render an opinion.
