Question : Watching Blu-ray's over DLNA

Hey guys,
must say I really love Mezzmo, specially the feature : Blu-ray + ISO streaming.
I am a purist when it comes to watching Blu-ray's so I do have a question, hoping that someone from staff or member who is a purist as well can provide me an answer!

This is my setup :

Software version : Mezzmo 4.1.3.0 (Installed on a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit , wired 1Gbit connection)
Streaming device : Oppo BDP-103D
HDTV : Panasonic 55" VT50 Plasma

Settings changed in Mezzmo :
-Enabled the checkbox Turn off transcoding for all connected devices in Transcode settings.
-Unchecked the checkbox complete partially transcoded audio/video files in background also in Transcode settings.
-In Device settings of Oppo BDP-103 tab : Transcoding > Unchecked the checkbox transcode incompatible media files so they can be played on the device.

By doing this, does this mean I will get the exact same PQ as playing from a Blu-ray disc in the BD disc tray ?
and does DLNA / streaming over a wired connection can cause any PQ loss, at least it shouldn't to my knowledge as in overall the bitrates from a Blu-ray Disc standard's initial data rate of 36 / 40 Mbit's ?

Hi The Revenant,

Simply turning off transcoding in the Transcoding Settings dialog means that all your files are streamed directly to your devices without any changes. It it then up to your device to decode and play the file. This maintains the exact same quality as the files you have on disk. The transcoding setting in the Transcoding Settings dialog is a global setting (i.e. it applies to all devices and overrides your device specific transcoding settings).

You also do have per device control via the Device Settings dialog (Transcoding tab) for each device. For example, you could turn on transcoding in Transcoding Settings dialog and then turn off transcoding for certain devices that you want all your files streamed natively. This lets you have transcoding turned on for a device on your home network that cannot play your Blu-ray rips natively.

Finally, you also have per file transcoding control if you need it. Right-click on a file and click Properties. On the Properties dialog, go to the Transcoding tab and all transcoded files are listed there for that file. Click the 'Use Original File' button and select the device you want to stream to. This ensures that this file will be streamed natively to that particular device.

Streaming over a wired connection is great for your video streaming. A wired network has the bandwidth to stream Blu-ray rips such as yours.

Note: A remaining bottleneck for your Blu-ray streaming may be the device(s) that you are streaming your Blu-ray rips to. Some devices cannot cope well with high bitrate files and that can cause stuttering when playing. This is a limitation of the device's firmware and the only thing that can be done is to reduce the video bitrate via re-encoding using your video tool or via transcoding in Mezzmo.

I regularly stream BD Rips over ethernet without transcoding. I use Kodi(OpenELEC) on a Chromebox and on a Raspberry Pi 2. Works great. The biggest challenge, as Paul mentioned, is making sure that the playback device won't choke on bitrate and that the audio tracks are compatible. Some devices will choke if your primary audio track is DTS, for example. It has nothing to do witih Mezzmo or DLNA just a matter of codec compatibility on the playback device.

Basically I did some testing of mine own here are the results :

Content played via : 01 > Blu-ray tray disc , 02 > USB 2.0 port and 03 > Mezzmo wired 1 Gbit connection.

Looks like Mezzmo is doing a great job of streaming your Blu-ray ISO movies to your Oppo BDP-103D :). If you have any problems, let us know and we'll help out.

Unless you have a real need to do full ISO rips of BDs, I recommend you use MakeMKV to rip them. With MKV, you will have the full-quality movie track, and you can pick which audio track(s) and special features to include.
