View Full Version : DTS Playback

When I Rip and encode movies, I typically add an AC3 track into the MKV to mimic the DTS audio as my TV, and a number of other devices are not licensed to play DTS, and I want to avoid transcoding. I preserve DTS tracks.

My question is, if a Smart TV is streaming an MKV from Mezzmo (straight into it's Ethernet port), is it possible to play the DTS track still present in the MKV via a HDMI connected Soundbar that does Support DTS, or is this not possible? From what I see, most sound bars connect to the source first (Blu-Ray player for example), and pass through the media to the TV, but in this case the TV is essentially the source. Can it pass DTS in the bitstream to the soundbar, even though it does not support DTS, itself?

Cheers.

Hi,
this usually depends upon the TV, it should have a setting for passthrough audio to allow it to send the audio stream directly to the sound bar. Can you tell us the make and model of the TV?

It's a 2016 Panasonic Viera (750b).

I cannot find any specific information on that model of TV but most Panasonic TVs support passthrough of DTS or AC3 to an audio receiver, since the TV is not decoding the audio but passing it straight to the receiver it does not need to be licensed for DTS as long as the receiver is.
