View Full Version : Mezzmo Media Player is jittery and glitchy on Amazon FireTV & FireTV Stick

I have been noticing this for awhile but hadn't really taken the time to explore deeply until this weekend.

I rip and encode my BD movies to .mkv files, typically using Handbrake. For some movies I like to leave the size and bitrate pretty high. I am noticing that these larger files suffer from Jitter and Stuttering on playback with the FireTV and FireTV Stick (both v2) when using Mezzmo Android's built-in Media Player. It almost looks like a framerate issue because you only really notice it on panning scenes and during action but static scenes are good. For example, I have a 15GB .mkv of the Revenant that is almost unwatchable using Mezzmo Android's Media Player because of the large amount of panning in the first 10 minutes. If I use VLC as the media player, the problem disappears. If I use Kodi and the Mezzmo Plug-In it is also smooth as butter.

We can eliminate Bandwidth limitations and hardware resources as culprits since I have transcoding turned off and they play fine with VLC and Kodi.

I have tried it with Device Profiles set to both Kodi and Conceiva (Mezzmo Android) with the same results either way.

we also can't be sure what is going on... one of our latest troubles with some ripping software is invalid timeline generated for the video, then VLC is usually playing that quite well, some other players are not, it may be something like that in the above example...you may try to reduce birate

I am having the same issue with the Mezzmo app on Fire TV and Fire TV stick (both latest versions), except the files I am having issues with are .mp4 files. The files are ripped from my DVD and BD collection using makeMKV then converted to .mp4 using Handbrake. Typically the file sizes are between 2GB and 6GB. During panning scenes the video becomes jittery, but is fine on static scenes. Like the original poster, the files seem to play fine on other media players/devices.

This could be a problem with the codec used to decode the video, can you please try selecting the HW button in the player when the video is playing to switch to software decoding to see if this is better or worse?

I tried this on both Fire stick and Fire TV. The problem was definitely less noticeable on the Fire Stick when the Mezzmo player had "HW" showing in the bottom corner. However, switching from "HW" to "SW" on the Fire TV box didn't seem to make a difference. The issue continued to occur. If it helps, the Fire Stick is on Wi-Fi, the Fire TV is wired (Gb). The movie I am using as a test is "The Secret Life of Pets", the first minute and a half is a panning sequence so the issue presents itself quickly. Let me know if any other particulars would help (Fire TV/Stick build versions, FFMPEG info on movie, etc.)

Can you please post the FFmpeg information of the file so we can see if there is anything particular about the file that might be causing this?

The FFmpeg information appears to be missing the stream information, possibly Mezzmo did not wait long enough to get it, can you please try getting the FFmpeg information again to see if the stream info is added?

Thanks, nothing in the FFmpeg information really jumps out at me so it is possibly an encoding issue. Could you please try pre-transcoding the file and force a full transcode to see if this allows the video to play smoothly? We will try a similar file here to see if we can reproduce it on our Fire TV Stick.

I pre-transcoded the file using the Mezzmo (android) device profile, but the problem is still there. I even replaced the original file with the transcoded one to make sure the newer one was playing.

Here is the FFMPEG for the transcoded file:

I tried streaming a similar movie here to our FireTV and it did not have the issue during the panning sequence at the start of Secret Life of Pets. It was a lower resolution version so possibly this was why. Could you please try making a sample of the first ten minutes of the movie and then send it to us at support [at] conceiva [dot] com. To create a sample please see https://superuser.com/questions/377343/cut-part-from-video-file-from-start-position-to-end-position-with-ffmpeg

Finally got around to testing the HW/SW decoding on both the FireTV and the FireTV Stick. The FireTV Stick lacks the resources to playback my large BD rips with the SW decoder so it was just a jumpy, pausing mess. However, playback on the FireTV Box with the Software decoding was smooth, the way I would expect. Turning the HW decoding back on and it gets jittery again.

Peter
08-15-2017, 10:52 AM
This would indicate that it is a problem with the codec being used for HW decoding, can you please enable logging in the settings of the app then exit and start the app again and try playing the video with HW enabled then disable logging and send us the log (you may need to install a file explorer app to copy the log from the /sdcard/conceiva/mezzmo folder) and we should be able to see which codec is being used.

I was finally able to cut the sample today. I just sent it over. I did confirm that the sample does exhibit the same issue when played on the fire tv box with the Mezzmo app.

Peter
08-18-2017, 11:34 AM
Thanks, we tested it here and there was a noticeable jump when the titles appeared in the city, if I turned on SW it was much worse. We will check to see which codec is being used for HW decoding to see if there are any alternatives available.

Peter
08-18-2017, 02:50 PM
There is only one codec available for hardware decoding so it is not possible to improve the decoding performance. Reducing the bitrate and/or resolution of the video through transcoding appears to be the only way to remove the jitters and smooth out the playback.

I have also seen reports that 24fps videos have a problem on the FireTV http://www.aftvnews.com/fire-tv-update-5-2-4-1-causing-poor-24p-video-playback-in-mrmc-kodi-and-spmc/

Are VLC and/or Kodi doing some post processing then because the issues only exist with playback through the internal video player?

Peter

Kodi does have a fix for the 24 fps issue http://www.aftvnews.com/fire-tv-update-5-2-4-1-causing-poor-24p-video-playback-in-mrmc-kodi-and-spmc/, we will need to check to see if something similar can be done for the internal video player.

Discovered something interesting this morning while I was messing with some lower bitrate HEVC/h265 encoded files. Until now, I was using Vimu Media Player to playback an BD Rips and the Mezzmo Media Player for everything else (other than the stuttering issue, everything is better about the Mezzmo Media Player). I tried playing back one of the h265 encoded files with the Mezzmo player and it was choppy and stuttery like the BD rips have been. While flipping between files I accidentally played back the same file with Vimu and it played smoothly. On a hunch, I disabled the Hardware encoder and VOILA, playback looked exactly like it does on the FireTV. I played back the same file with the Mezzmo Player, flipping between having the HW and SW decoders active and the picture jitters the same either way.

Is there a chance this is an issue where the CPU in the FireTV stick is not capable of playing back high bitrate and HEVC files and the Mezzmo Media Player is not actually using the HW decoder even though it is set to do so?

Peter
12-14-2017, 09:13 AM
Yes it is possible that even though HW is selected the player will fallback to software decoding as a hardware decoder cannot be found or is blacklisted due to performance issues. Vimu may be providing their own driver for the hardware decoding or could be using one of the blacklisted decoders, we can investigate here to see if HEVC files are being decoded using a software decoder.

As I think about it, this would also explain why the FireTV box with its beefier CPU presents the same problem with BD Rips but not nearly to the extreme that I see on the sticks.

I tried a BD rip here that was a 20Mbit h264 video and it played without issue, this was on a FireTV stick. Can you please post the ffmpeg information of a file that has problems when streaming so that we can find a similar file here?

Thanks, I will look for some similar files here to test on the Amazon Fire TV.

We tested a file that had some stuttering issues with the current video player and then tried the same file with the latest ijkplayer code (which the Mezzmo video player is based upon) and it was much better so we will update the Mezzmo app with the latest ijkplayer code.

We have integrated the updated ijkplayer video player into the Mezzmo app, it is now in beta testing on Google Play. If all goes well we will release the updated app to Amazon's store early next week.

The sample files we tested seemed to be much smoother, possibly if you can send us a sample file that plays jittery on your FireTV we can test it here to see if we can reproduce the issue.
