View Full Version : Repeating issue

I am having a issue where when I am watching my video's on my Roku, during transcoding it is repeating 30 sec sections of the show that do not exist in the original format. This is getting really annoying, any ideas of what could be causing this. transcoding FPS is between 150 - 200 fps, and CPU is like 4% Memory is around 10% max.

Thank you

Hi,
Mezzmo transcodes the file to 10 second segments for delivery to the Roku, possibly the Roku is requesting the same segments or Mezzmo is creating extra segments when transcoding. Can you please try playing a file that has already been transcoded or pre-transcoding a the file http://www.mezzmo.com/wiki/doku.php?id=pre-transcoding_files&s[]=pre&s[]=transcode to see if the repeating issue still occurs?

Ok tested, Pre-transcoding works fine, however I did notice that when transcoding on the fly to a Roku device, it transcodes for a bit then says queue. Then when the 30 to 60 repeat happens, it starts transcoding again. It is as if it goes into Queue status, but forgets to transcode more, then the Roku goes HEY I need more, and it starts transcoding again but transcodes 30 to 60 seconds before it should. I had Mezzmo up while watching to see what it did, I found it strange that it Transcoded a lot, then just went to Queue but never transcoded again till the revert happened.

What can happen when streaming hls is that the device will request a segment beyond what is currently being transcoded so Mezzmo will stop the current transcode and start transcoding from the offset requested. If the offset is not being correctly calculated by ffmpeg then it may start transcoding earlier than it is supposed to resulting in a repeat of a section of the video. Can you please try playing a video that had the repeat problem again to see if the problem still occurs after transcoding is completed? This will tell us whether the completed transcode has a duplicated section or if the device is requesting the same sections over again.

Just watched another, it ran fine till it needed to transcode again, then it had the 60 sec repeat. It then transcoded more, and queues more, once it finishes transcoding it no longer reverses, however as long as it goes into queue and then starts transcoding again, that is where the repeat is every time. Once transcoding is 100% it never repeats again.

I have turned on Logging now, unfortunately after I watched the last movie.. :/ But I will keep an eye on logs, and post them when it happens again.

Also another thing I noticed, when watching the SAME movie, it will Transcode sometimes 10% before going into queue and sometimes even as far as 90% before going into queue mode. Its totally random on how much it Transcodes on the fly %

We will try streaming some files to our Roku here to try and reproduce this. Can you please right-click on the file in Mezzmo and select Get FFmpeg Information... then copy and paste it into a forum post so we can test with a similar file here?

We tried it here on a similar file and after transcoding was queued it resumed without the video repeating on the Roku. As a test can you please try going to Transcoding Settings in Mezzmo and disabling hardware encoding for transcoding to see if this is causing the issue?

It interesting that I am also having an identical issue. I have been using Mezzmo for around 10 years and in the past year or two I starting using Roku as the client interface. I am now seeing this repeat (30 to 60 seconds) during most movies around the 1 hour mark (52 to 78 minutes) and again around 15 to 30 minutes later. I have logged the transcoding and I have been seeing the "Child process ended with code: 109" listed in the log file about the same time the movie does this 'repeat'. This has been now going on for at least 3 to 6 months and I didn't know if the router or computer was going into some type of sleep mode even though they are set up not too. Now it looks like this issue may be tied to Mezzmo which may be helped by using a Roku client. Note this 'repeat' issue is see on multiple TVs using the same Roku version hardware (Roku 3), I have not tested it using other Roku hardware.
Hardware Specs:
Atmel Processor 8 -core
16GB Memory
4 x 5GB drives
Win 10
Mezzemo Ver. 5.2
Roku 3
Multiple clients running hardwired and WIFI

OK - thanks for letting us know. We're looking into it here. We have not been able to reproduce it yet though using our video files. Perhaps it's best for you to upload one of the videos that has this problem to a filesharing site like Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, etc. and email the download link to us at support [at] conceiva [dot] com. We'll then be able to replicate the issue you are having.

Ericve I have both a Roku 3 and a Roku Sharp TV, both have the same issue. so its not related to exactly one type of Roku device. Just like you said shows over 45 min to 1 hour in length are the only ones it happens too.. It used to not do it, but recently it started and it happens on ANY movie that is over 1 hour in length. Most of my video's are MKV format, I wonder if it has something to do with MKV transcoding. Also for testing I have made sure that all advanced power settings are set to never shut down or turn off any device, or HD. It still happens even when power settings are set as such, so I don't believe its a power issue. One thing I am going to try is to have my Transcoding on a different drive than Mezzmo is running on.

What is code 109?

BreeOge, to help out I have Mezzmo application running on the C: drive, the D: drive has the Mezzmo database and artwork, the M: drive has the movies (mostly MKVs), the P: drive has the transcoded files on it. Each drive letter is a physical drive, there isn't any RAID or striping going on. I do think it has to do with the transcoding and I also believe it is not a power issue i.e. PCs going into sleep mode.
Note, I am using ffmpeg64 build 2017-08-22 18:40:38.

I just watched a full movie with out a repeat! Ericve said that his are on other drives as well, so that almost rules that out, however I did disable the Direct3D decoding support, and I think that might have been the issue. Also by looking back at the old logs, I noticed that when Direct3D decode was enabled, I would receive this error in the logs. "Either a hw_frames_ctx or a hw_device_ctx needs to be set for hardware decoding". However after disabling it, I no longer received that log and it ran with out a repeat! Sounds like Direct3D is missing some attributes it needs.

Edit* I did update my Direct3D a few days ago to rule it out being the issue of being corrupt.

Also I am UL the movie right now for testing.

Thanks - got your email. We'll test it here and report back via email. In the meantime, if you wish, you could test the theory that Direct3D hardware decoding is causing the problem by watching a few movies with Direct3D turned on and turned off. We'll do the same here. Let us know the results.

We have reproduced the problem here and found that it only occurs with Direct3D hardware decoding on, with this turned off it does not occur.

Yea, I was just getting online to post the exact same findings, only when Direct3D hardware decoding is on. Watched 2 without it on just fine, turned it on and it repeated.

We are building a new ffmpeg to see if this is fixed in the latest code.

Peter

Using the new ffmpeg the repeating issue does not occur with Direct3D hardware decoding on so if you would like to try this new ffmpeg send an email to support [at] conceiva [dot] com.

Still happening, I have watched 2 movies with it turned on, and both movies had a repeat. I will say its not as bad as it used to be, but it does still exist with the new ffmpeg. I have been able to cause it to repeat pretty easy as well, after you start watching the show, pause the show.. for a few min, then continue, it will happen within 30 min usually of doing that.

Thanks for testing, we will make a change so that hardware accelerated decoding is not used for segmented files and this should workaround the issue.

Issue with repeat still exist. Exactly 1 hour into a movie it did a repeat!

Peter

Do you have Direct3D decoding enabled or disabled in Transcoding Settings?

BreeOge

It was Enabled!

Peter

Possibly we are not removing the hardware decoding in all cases, please try it with hardware decoding disabled until we can test here to see if the flag is still getting added.

Update to issue. I can watch a full movie with Hardware Decoding disabled, HOWEVER if I have to pause the movie for any reason, about 30 min later after resuming it will repeat even with Hardware Decoding turned off.

Peter
05-03-2018, 09:36 AM
Pausing a movie may pause the transcoding process and when play resumes the transcoding is resumed, if it is not resumed at the correct location this could cause a repeat. We will check to see if we can reproduce this here.

I guess Ill have to look for an alternative to Mezzmo, because having it repeat is getting super annoying. I hope its fixed in the future, guess Ill check back later since I bought it. Its has to be a transcoding issue with Mezzmo and Roku players..

We've been trying to reproduce the problem here but it is difficult to test since you have to watch the video to see if it repeats. Pre-transcoding files is a workaround to the problem as this will avoid the problem of stopping and restarting transcoding. We can provide you with a device profile that transcodes to mkv if you want to try it, send an email to support [at] conceiva [dot] com.
