What is the difference between a canister vacuum cleaner and a classic vertical? Hands down, the canister is much more versatile--they not only handle carpets, but they shine at cleaning bare floors, vacuuming staircase, and sucking up dirt out of corners. We evaluated 16 canisters, measuring suction power, noise level, and how well they removed embedded dirt from nylon luxury rugs. We then judged the power of the attachments, maneuverability, as well as the clarity of their use and care guides. Here, the dirt on our top actors:
No-Frills Champ
This basic model costs less than others shown here, but it is just as good at picking up dirt from unfinished flooring. In reality, it also was the best of all our picks at removing fine soil ground deep in to our test rugs. Extras include large rear wheels for simple steering and a thermostat which shuts off the motor when a clog or dirty filter causes it to overheat. 2 minuses: There's no headlight--good to have if you're in a dark corner--along with the 20-foot cord does not vacuumautomatically rewind, and that means you must rewrap it every time.

You obtain great carpet-cleaning power and smooth, gliding strokes from using this vacuum--its strong rotating brushes drive it forward so it almost feels self-propelled. The handle is comfortable to grip, but it does not rotate sideways, so it's difficult to reach all the way under low furniture. A bonus: This cleaner comes with a microfilter that traps more dust and dirt from the exhaust compared to models with just a motor filter perform.
