Both

It could be bottle-necked at either spot. The files are stored and streamed from a PC that always goes through a router or switch.

Thanks for your reply, my reason for asking is because my "home office" is having a refit and my router is heading for a new shelf near the ceiling and the computer is getting a new home on the floor under the desk.

Your Wi-Fi card will connect to the router and send traffic to the devices on the network, there should be no problem for a Wi-Fi card to transmit through a desk.
