View Full Version : Sony KDL 32EX500 in Australia - DLNA capable?

Hi All,

I've been using a Sony KDL 40HX700 as a Media player for Mezzmo for a few months now. The setup does everything I want. I have an old analog Sony downstairs which is way past its use-by date and I'd like to replace it with a 32" (81cm) Sony which can also accept streaming from Mezzmo. My Sony works beautifully with Mezzmo so I'm keen to stick with a "standardised" platform which is proven and reliable.

The 32EX500's are becoming more affordable in Australia at the moment (Christmas frenzy) but there seems to be some confusion about their DLNA capabilities. The Aust. Sony website does not show "Bravia Internet" capability for the EX500 - the EX600 series is the cheapest, according to Sony. (but it's $200 more expensive).

However, there are plenty of web pages which suggest that it does have DLNA capabilities. The dlna.org website, for example, produces a certificate which is (essentially) the same as the certificate for my 40HX700, so is the Australian version "crippled"?

Can anyone confirm this one way or the other for Australian KDL-EX500 receivers?

If not, I guess I'll still buy one and see if I can do a deal on a BDP-S370 as well since I've already got one and I know it also works fine with Mezzmo. (Thinking about it, this seems a more sensible approach as I'll get a TV, Blue-Ray player and DLNA for a bit less than an EX600).

Thanks,
Paul.

You could also check out the BDP-X37 blueray. It is a S370 and does do dlna. We bought 3 for xmas at < $100 ea at Costco. The X57 is also cheaper than the S570.

Thanks John - however I haven't seen that model in Australia.
I had a look at a local shop and the EX500 doesn't have a LAN port.
Probably use a bdp.

I'll just quickly add that the BDP-S370 actually plays more than an EX600 via DLNA.

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for that. Makes my decision even easier. S370s are becoming quite affordable now.

I've never really used my S370 much for DLNA as it's connected to the HX700 so I just use that. I streamed a couple of shows through the 370 yesterday to make sure that it worked OK.

Would your testing also suggest that the 370 is more capable than the HX700 as I think it uses the same firmware as the EX600? Not that it matters - as I mentioned - my current setup works perfectly anyway.

By the way - is it possible to edit the Thread title? I tried to amend it to show that I had solved the question but couldn't find a way so I just changed the title of my first post.

Looking at DLNA specs for the HX700 it looks very similar to S370, but we haven't tested non-DLNA-spec file support on the HX700, so not sure if it's the same as the S370 or closer to EX600 or something else.

The main difference between the EX600 and the S370 is that (the Australian and Canadian models) of the BDP support DivX, while the TV doesn't. I don't know whether the HX700 supports that or not.

I'll check why you can't edit the thread title - if you use the "Go Advanced" button, does it let you?

"Go Advanced" lets me edit the post title but not the thread title (as far as I can see). But I've probably missed something obvious - I usually do. :o

It's possible that this is not permitted by the forum's settings. I'll check it out and enable it if I can (and if there's such a setting).
