Thread: Periods (or decimal points) in Filenames Instead of Spaces

Default Periods (or decimal points) in Filenames Instead of Spaces

While going through my library, Mezzmo misreads all my movie files as television shows if there are periods used instead of spaces - i.e. movie.title.mkv. I have to go through each item in my library and manually "Get Online Video Metadata", change the periods to spaces and click "Movies" (instead of TV Shows) and then the film data is easily found.

Is there some way to tell Mezzmo to treat periods the same as spaces and not incorrectly identify the files?

When looking at it a little closer, I suppose the problem is that Mezzmo is passing the periods (.) on to the metadata service providers, which are failing their lookups with it. As I said, when I look up manually and remove the periods from the "Title" field (and change it to "Movies" instead of "TV Shows", I get the correct results without fail.

Mezzmo will replace the periods with spaces when performing the lookup for metadata but if there is not an exact match the lookup will fail. The manual lookup is more relaxed and will show you metadata that is not an exact match.

I'm very flustered by this, as it can be as simple as showing the title as parsed by Mezzmo with a period at the end, and the lookup fails. I remove the period, and the lookup succeeds. I can't see how this is operating as it should, as at least 50% of my lookups fail. I could give you hundreds of examples of a filename - something like movie.title.year.some_extra_crap.mkv where Mezzmo will understand that movie.title is the title, but it will show as movie.title. in the search field when I do a manual lookup, but when I remove the trailing period and replace the delimiter period with a space the lookup succeeds without fail.

I don't see how it's even usable in this state. I am having to go through a library of approximately 1000 movies and manual update the metadata on more than half of them.

    Thanks for your help!

I have several sample files here with periods in the filename and they lookup the metadata correctly, example Your.Sisters.Sister.2011.720p.BRrip.x264.YIFY.mp4. Can you provide some more specific examples so that we can try them here?

It appears I was at least partially wrong. I used a tool to change all the file names - replacing the periods with spaces. While a subset did lookup correctly, the majority did not. I looked closer and realized that all the files that were being categorized as "TV Shows" and failing their lookups were in folders (with subs, poster art, etc). I tested this by moving all the movies that were showing up as "TV Shows" out of their subfolders and into the root above them (the specified folder for the library) and reran everything, and they were all properly categorized as "Movies" and their metadata was correctly pulled.

Is this intended behavior? Do all movie files have to be in the root folder as specified in the library? Is there a configuration setting that I could change to not make this so?

Thanks for your help and let me know if I need to repost this as a new question.

I'm sorry, I should say I moved all the movies that begin with the letter "A" into the root folder. Had I done it for all of them I guess my problem would be largely solved.

The files do not need to be in the root folder, they can be in sub folders but the sub folder name may also be used for the metadata lookup.
