Best DNLA Server

I don't often do this, but I had register just to give my thanks.

I have a Samsung C series TV, which as I understand has a somewhat unique implementation of DNLA. I installed 6 different DNLA servers, of which only 3 were recognized by my TV, and only 2 were able to transcode my MKV files.

PlayOn works, but is extremely sluggish and broke my Skype! Seriously, Skype audio now routes to PlayOn instead of my speakers!

Mezzmo was detected immediately, plays everything I throw at it, and is very snappy.


A few things to bring up:

1. I am a little unsure of the terms of my license. Does it cover a certain number of years, or is it lifetime?
2. Although my library updates quickly, I get many ffdshow errors. I assume this has to do with thumbnail generation, as I have never had a problem playing a file afterward.
3. As responsive as you are to the community, I can't help but think Mezzmo would benefit from some sort of third party plugin system. Many of these forum suggestions seem peripheral to the core product, and if some sort of API were available I'm sure some would take a stab at implementation.

To answer your questions:

1) Yes, the license is for lifetime. If this is ever changed in the future (unlikely), I'm sure there will be a long grace period.
2) ffdshow or FFmpeg? Mezzmo does not use any codecs on your system nor does it utilize ffdshow in any way. The only possibility I can think of (related to Mezzmo) is if you have the File Browser pane open to some folder with files - that does use codecs to generate thumbnails in the pane (unrelated to the main database).
3) It's a great idea and one certainly worth discussing more seriously - I'll bring it up internally.

2) Yes my mistake, I'm sure it was ffmpeg. I tried to replicate the problem and I cannot; a full rescan worked fine. I'll post any details in the tech support forum if it happens again, and ill be sure to note which file browser windows are open.

Sure - no problem. Would it be an assert in mathematics.c file, by any chance? If it was, we have a new FFmpeg that doesn't exhibit that problem available here.

I just gotta throw my $0.02 in here too, man. This is one of the nicest pieces of software I've seen in a while. It simply works and streams beautifully. I'd love to see the 64-bit version and even more the DVD-on-disk thing, but y'know ... I know coding new features takes time, along with the updating and fixing ... it's a "full time" thing.

To my mind, you beat the livin' daylights out of the Windows 7 media steaming service. Mezzmo mesmerizes in a fantastic way. Keep up the great work. As users, we definitely appreciate it.

I use both Mezzmo and PlayOn. The biggest hole in Mezzmo is identified by Conceiva's comparison. Mezzmo does not support URLs.

The biggest use of Playon for me is the ability to use scripts. There is also some nice functionality they are currently having in beta.
