Default Mezzmo Deleted The Entire Contents of my 640 GB HDD

    Hello,

First time poster here. I have been using this software for almost the entire 30 day trial period and it has been amazing. It makes everything so much easier and it has been hassle free and incredibly easy to setup until yesterday. Before I describe the problem let me give the details requested in the official Support Request since these details will probably be required.

    Code:
    Mezzmo Version: 2.1.13.0
    Trial Version: Yes
DLNA Device Make & Model: Samsung PN58C7000
    Device Profile: Samsung C
Device Connection: Connected to network via ethernet cable. Using the default software on the Samsung TV to browse folders (Allshare).
    CPU/RAM: Intel i7 920 @ stock speed / 3x2GB PC-12800 OCZ Triple Channel Kit
    Firewall: Windows Firewall
    OS: Windows 7 64 bit
The 640 GB HDD listed in the title that had its contents deleted is my main media drive. It is where I download/rip media to. Mezzmo is installed on a Intel X-25M G2 SSD. Like I said, I noticed this issue yesterday and I had no idea what was causing it. It was very odd, because the folders that were affected still existed but their contents had been completely erased. I say "folders that were affected" because not everything was erased. More on this later. I thought it may have been the HDD going bad, even though it is only 1 year old but I wasn't sure since the folder hierarchy remained (but not their contents) and I had no HDD errors from windows about the drive.

It wasn't until a few minutes ago that I realized what the problem was. Within Mezzmo, if you view Media Server -> Transcoding Settings. There is a "Transcoded files temporary folder" which was set to the root folder of this 640 GB HDD, which in this case is my D:. Just to be clear the "Transcoded files temporary folder" was "D:". After viewing this menu I noticed the "Maximum folder size (GB):" which was set to 80GB. I think I may have edited it to that. Either way, after seeing this I realized that my data did not begin to disappear until I dropped under this limit. Coincidence? Like I said earlier, not everything within the D: drive was affected, just the majority of it. I had about 50 GB of free space when this happened. After this happened there was 450 GB of free space, leaving about 150 GB free (formatting reduces 640 to 596). It wasn't until a few minutes ago that Mezzmo finished off the remainder of my HDD (without asking).

I decided to change the "Transcoded files temporary folder" to an actual folder within the D:, just because I thought that may prevent it next time. So, I made D:\Transcode and it asked "Would you like to move your existing temporary files to the new folder? If you answer no, they will be deleted." I think this is quite clear that it means any files that contain transcoded data of a video file and not the actual video file. Well, in my case I hit no because I have no need to save that. After hitting no it finished off the remainder of my 640 GB HDD.

So just to recap. I believe the first issue, where the majority of the data was lost was due to this "Maximum folder size (GB)" option. I was able to download new media and write it to this HDD even though I may not have had space. Or, I didn't have enough space on the HDD for Mezzmo to transcode so it just transcoded and started overwriting. The second issue I am having trouble replicating atm, but I think that is because I haven't transcoded anything yet. I will report back if I am able to replicate it. I should add that my library consisted of a large folder named "Stuff" within the D: drive. After the first incident some of the folders within "Stuff" and their contents survived and some folders outside of "Stuff" and their contents were erased.

Edit: Unable to replicate. I am unable to get one of the folders to show up that shows Transcoding data... One of them is "Video" and the other is something like "Current" if I remember correctly. Once I get that then I will be able to properly test it.

    Hello,

I am very sorry for this experience! I've just checked the code and indeed, the clean up code will try to clean up any files in subfolders from where you point your temporary transcoded folder to be.

The first issue is that it should not have let you set your D: drive as a valid path - it should require a subfolder.

The second issue is that when the actual files total size exceeds the maximum folder size, Mezzmo starts deleting files (based on their date - oldest go first), but it does it for all files in this subfolder (or your whole drive in your case), not only its own temporary files.

Both of these issues have just been fixed - thank you for pointing them out.

If you wish, I can tell you how to manually move the transcoding folder, so that you don't get the prompt to move/delete the files, because otherwise it'll move your whole drive again.

Thanks for looking into it. I am glad to hear it has been fixed. I just wish I had made a video of this so I could have gotten in on the special offer deal instead. Oh well.

Have you tried using Recuva to recover your deleted files? You probably would have a good chance at recovering the majority of your files using this free utility.

Its not a big deal. The majority of it was media I had already watched. Some of it was college work but I wont be needing that anymore. So nothing important or irreplaceable was lost.
