Default Rapidshare and proxy feature request

I've downloaded and tested the latest downloadstudio. I must say I'm very impressed as it has most of the features I look for, in particular, the ability to monitor and paste several links directly onto the software for downloading. This feature is strangely missing from most of your competitors' products.

But two things actually stopped me from using it. First, as has been reported elsewhere, Rapidshare Premium doesn't work with it. Instead of the actual file, I could only download a small little file. Nothing is wrong with the file availability, my password and I most definitely have enabled direct download at rapidshare. I've no trouble downloading from rapid with freedownloadmanager.

Another issue, which is more of a request. When adding or editing a site on the site management dialog, I could change many settings, but I'm only allowed the option to "not use proxy"? How about the case when my default is NOT to use any proxy, but I'd like to use proxy for that particular site? Why is this not allowed as an option? Looks like an easily fixable oversight.

Another proxy-related request: everytime the download screen appears (say I copied a list of URLs to my clipboard, and the program detected it and opened a download dialog), I'd like to be able to specify if I'd like to use proxy or not, and which proxy. Unfortunately the option is not offered, which could be important for some downloads.

Any case, cheers for a great product. I have to uninstall it in favor of another software, but when these are fixed, I'd be back to take a look. My worry is: the trial period would probably be over by then.

    Have a great X'mas!

Thanks for checking out DownloadStudio and your kind words.

DownloadStudio should be working fine for RapidShare Premium . As long as you have logged into RapidShare in your preferred web browser (IE, Firefox, Opera) then DownloadStudio will read your cookie from your web browser and all should be fine. Our testing here works well with all web browsers. Perhaps try logging into RapidShare using your web browser again. Your cookie may have expired or have been deleted from some reason. If that does not work, can you tell us your operating system, web browser & version and rapidshare download link?

With regard proxies, I understand your point. The current DownloadStudio proxy support is application-wide and not per download job. Providing per download job proxy support does give you more control with your downloading. We will look into making proxy support per download job for an upcoming release.

Keep checking back here to see what's new with DownloadStudio. We're planning some exciting features for 2009!

    Best regards,

    Paul

    Thanks for your reply.

I've always thought download management software could download from RS without using cookies. RS does not rely on cookies for premium users, as we have passwords to download direct. Apart from orbit downloader (which works the same way as your product, ie requiring cookies), freedownloadmanager, internet download manager and flashget could all grab files from RS directly without having to log on to the site for premium users.

Secondly with regard to the proxy, it isn't just about individual jobs. It'd be nice if you could let user specify which proxy to use for which site. You nearly got it right (and it's to your credit and competitive advantage), by letting user choose (by ticking a box) 'Not to use proxy' for a particular site (under site management). But what if it's the opposite? I want to use proxy for a particular site, but in general, as a default, I don't?

If these issues could be settled you'd have a very comprehensive and configurable download manager, at least from my experiences.

RapidShare Premium definitely requires a cookie to be sent to it when trying to download files. Within this cookie is your premium session data that is created by RapidShare when you log into RapidShare Premium. You cannot simply download without it. Most file sharing sites work like this.

DownloadStudio (and some other download managers) use your web browser to get the premium cookie, where others ask you to log in within their download manager and try to create the cookie for you. We like using your web browser since its reliable and that's where all your cookies exist anyway (i.e. you can maintain them in one place). DownloadStudio reads cookies from all popular web browsers - IE8/7/6, Firefox 3/2, Opera 9.x, Flock, etc.

With regard proxies, I agree that you want set up a proxy for a particular site/domain. DownloadStudio already has site rules (Options dialog/Site Rules page) just for this purpose (to set downloading rules for a particular site/domain), so we'll look at adding in proxy support there.

    Best regards,

    Paul

Ok, you guys are the pros, so you know what you're talking about. It just seems easier from the user's angle to have the downloader create the necessary cookies, if they're required. Anyway, that's a design decision and I respect your reasons for the choices you made.

About proxy configuration, it's great to know your team's working on it.

    Thanks.
