Default Mezzmo response is slow when browsing from a DMC or iPhone / Android apps

    Hi Dennis,

I've got Mezzmo 2.3.2.0 trial running on an i3-540 - Windows 7 Home Premium - SP1. For testing, I'm sharing a small library of test files, maybe 100 files.

When I browse Mezzmo's shared media folders via UPnP/DLNA on any of my DMP Players on my network (Samsung BD-C5500, Sony SMP-N100, WDTV Live, Windows XBMC), everything seems to work fine. Folder browsing is speedy and reliable, and Mezzmo does a terrific job transcoding or remuxing to the devices that are finicky about codecs or containers.

However, when I attempt to browse Mezzmo via any of the below apps on iPhone (iOS 4.01) or Samsung Galaxy Tab (7" Android 2.2), Mezzmo is quite slow to respond. When I click on any of Mezzmo's shared folders, any of these apps can take 3-12 seconds to show the contents of each folder. This appears to be unrelated to the loading of thumbnails, as it happens even in folders without thumbnails, or when I turn off thumbnail loading in the apps that allow for it. In comparision, when I use the same apps to browse TVersity or Orb on another, older machine (P4), folder browsing is quite speedy, as I'd expect it to be. To rule out any possible issues with the computer on which Mezzmo is running, I installed TVersity on the same machine and it responds in an expectedly speedy fashion.

    iPhone apps tested:
PlugPlayer (very slow and unreliable with PlugPlayer in particular, IMO the best DLNA app for the iPhone)
    Media:Connect
    AirPlayer
    MediaLink Player Light
    Eyecon Troller
    SongBook UPnP
    SmartStor Fusion Stream
    ZappoTV
    LivingMediaPlayer
    ThreeSums Lite
    UPnPeek
    8Player Lite

    Android apps tested:
    UPnPlay
    Skifta
    Twonky
    AndroMote
    Eyecon Troller
    Sitecom aMedia Control
    SharkMote Free

Any thoughts as to why Mezzmo (and not TVersity or Orb) is so slow with iPhone / Android apps, while working fine with other DLNA players? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Best,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,

I've been testing the Galaxy Tab recently (with iMediaShare and RockPlayer) and have found it to be quite fast actually. Using the AllShare on the tab wasn't that great though. However, it sounds like your issue may be a bit different (since you're not using AllShare), so can you please send in the logs browsing one of the slow folders using the Galaxy Tab (any app of your choice), so that I could compare to what I'm getting here and see what the difference could be.

    Hi Dennis,

Thanks for the quick reply. I've sent email to support at conceiva with logs attached. For the logs, I browsed Mezzmo with a few apps on the Galaxy Tab, followed by several apps on the iPhone. In all cases, Mezzmo was slow to serve up directories, while the same apps on both platforms browsed a TVersity server on another PC with expected speed.

I've never had good results with AllShare on the Galaxy Tab. Though I appaud Samsung's efforts to bless nearly their entire product line with DLNA, I've been less than impressed with their implementation of it in most cases.

If you're playing around with Android DLNA/UPnP apps, have a look at UPnPlay. Though its interface could be better, it's one of the best free android DMP/DMC apps I've found. AndroMote, EyeconTroller, and Skifta are also worth a look. I have yet to purchase PlugPlayer for Android, but I do love it on the iPhone.

Though it's somewhat of a competing product, check out Twonky for Android, as well. It has the wonderful ability to push nearly any content (be it from a media server, local to the Android device, or embedded in a web page, to a DMR on the network. For example, when reading an article in a web browser that has an embedded YouTube video, long-press on the video and choose "Beam with Twonky" to "beam" the video to your DMR of choice. It's a delightful feature.

Interesting that you mention iMediaShare. I'm running a slightly older version on my 7" Galaxy Tab, but it seems to be focused on pushing online "channels" and locally stored media to DMRs. I haven't found a way to see Mezzmo or my other media servers from within iMediaShare. Neat product, though.

At any rate, I hope the logs can shed some light as to why Mezzmo is slow responding to iPhone and Android apps, while seemingly fine with other players on the network.

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,

Thanks for the logs - we'll investigate and see what's happening.

I'll check out the products you suggested as well. The problem with AllShare on the Samsung is that it relies on built-in codecs (which isn't a lot of codecs), while third-party products (like the RockPlayer) just use avlibs and similar to play almost anything and then it just comes down to sending something over that the device can decode with it's CPU for smooth playback. I'm using the latest iMediaShare (3.61, I think) and it allows browsing media servers.

    Default Conflict found!

    Hi Dennis,

I did a little sleuthing this weekend, suspicious that something on my network might be conflicting with Mezzmo. I unplugged & turned off all devices on my network, leaving only the Mezzmo server (hardwired) and my router (D-Link DIR-625). This left me with three remaining WiFi devices to test which, for the purposes of this post, I'll refer to as the "offending devices":

    - iPhone 4 - iOS 4.01
    - Samsung 7" Galaxy Tab - Android 2.2 - (only used on WiFi, not cell data)
    - my old, deactivate iPhone 3gs - iOS 4.01 - (I use this on WiFi only, like an iPod Touch)

Here's what I found. If I fire up any ONE of the "offending devices" on the network, I can browse Mezzmo from it with excellent speed. This works well for any of the iOS or Android apps I tried. However, as soon as i fire up a second "offending device," browsing Mezzmo folders slows down considerably, taking anywhere from 3 to 12 seconds to drill down into any particular folder, depending on the app used. At this point, I'll experience slow browsing of Mezzmo folders on EITHER of the "offending devices." If I then disable WiFi on one of the offending devices, browsing Mezzmo folders from the single remaining device (either iPhone or Galaxy Tab) returns to it's previous responsive speed.

Again, this is with all other servers, players, devices, etc. on the network unplugged or turned off, ruling them out. If I then fire up all the other devices on the network, I can browse Mezzmo just fine with any ONE of the offending devices at a time, once again reassuring me that there are no other conflicts on the network. If I fire up a second "offending device," the problem rears its ugly head again.

Note that this occurs when I fire up a 2nd "offending device," even if that 2nd device isn't running any DLNA/UPnP apps (though I can't be completely certain about the Galaxy Tab, as it may have a UPnP layer at the OS level), so it doesn't appear to be related to the UPnP protocol specifically. But for sure, all I have to do is turn on WiFi on a second device, and the first device instantly shows a considerably slower response from Mezzmo.

I'd be tempted to point a finger at the router at this point, but this problem only occurs with Mezzmo. I can browse my other servers (currently TVersity, ORB, and XBMC) on the network just fine with all three "offending devices" simultaneously with no ill-effects.

Anyway, at least we've narrowed down the conflict to a particular set of circumstances. At this point, we just need to figure out why Mezzmo response slows down when a second iDevice or Android tablet is connected to the nework. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,

Excellent find, thank you for narrowing things down!

Can you please go into Media Devices, Properties and select a network card specifically for each device (basically change from "Auto" to any network card). Then try running with two or more "offending" devices and see if that makes any difference. Please let me know.

    Hi Dennis,

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work out as we had hoped. For all of the Media Devices listed in Mezzmo, I changed it from Auto to Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet (the only adapter in this machine). Mezzmo exhibited the same slow response when more than one "offending device" was present on the network. I even tried rebooting the machine and verified that the settings stuck, but still no love.

Adric requested via email that I submit some further logs. I tested PlugPlayer and Persona Media:Connect with only one "offending device" (fast Mezzmo response) and also with a second "offending device" (Mezzmo slows down considerably) present on the network. I submitted four logs (one for each condition for each app) via email, if you'd like to take a look.

Thanks for the continued diagnostic help, and hopefully these additional logs can shed some further light on the situation.

    Best,
    Chris
