Thread: Better remote access support

    Default Better remote access support

PlugPlayer and AirPlayer are two of the few iPhone/iPad apps that allow a user to connect to a remote DLNA/UPnP media server. I've gotten this feature to work well with a competing media server, but it's been unreliable at best with Mezzmo. I've mapped the appropriate port in my router (53168), as well as pointing PlugPlayer and AirPlayer to http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:53168/desc (using my public IP address), but PP and AP both have a hard time even seeing Mezzmo, if at all. Am I missing something?

For sure, Mezzmo needs to support user/password authentication for clients outside of the local LAN, to prevent unauthorized users to access my entire media library.

    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

User/password authentication is not part of DLNA, so I'm not sure that it should be done at Mezzmo's level. Can you please PM me with a bit more details (e.g., what is the other server and how you can access it) and we'll investigate.

I would love to see some sort of remote access myself, similar to ORB. But in the meantime, here is another solution. Take a look at Monsoon Multimedia's Vulkano. It is a Place Shifter device that also works like a DVR. It goes inline between your Cable or Satellite box and your TV. It uses IR blasters to remotely control the set top box. The wonderful thing about this is that you can access the Vulkano remotely through your firewall, control your set top box and stream whatever video it is playing to anywhere you have an Internet connection. They have players for PC, iPhone/iPad and Android.

Now, since my DirecTV box can see the Mezzmo server and playback the streams, the Vulkano device captures that and restreams it to my remote player. I have an Android phone (Motorola Atrix) and my wife has an iPhone 3GS. Both phones get wonderful streams from Mezzmo across our DirecTV/Vulkano system. The only downside is that it only supports one remote stream at a time. On your internal network, it will support as many streams as you bandwidth will support as long as every instance is watching the same stream. Now I have my entire media collection at my fingertips (literally) wherever I go (and have either WiFi or 3g service).

I have been so impressed with the quality of the Mezzmo transcoder that I have purchased the product and I am going to retire my OrbCaster server. I had an issue initially with getting it to playback on my DirecTV box but Mezzmo support had me up and running in no time. Thanks, Dennis!

Hope this helps out those of you looking for remote access.

I use Techinline remote desktop for provid service to my clients remotely. I used to work with other programs such as Logmein and Teamviewer. Their free versions were obviously limited in functions and pro version are pretty expensive. I won't deny that Logmein is one of the best tools that I'v seen and you are lucky if you can afford it's price. Anyway Techinline is worth its little price and is perfect alternative to all expensive tools has all necessary functions and works stable.
    hope this helps !
