Thread: Samsung BD-D5700 Blu-ray Player - Video Transcoding Support

Default Samsung BD-D5700 Blu-ray Player - Video Transcoding Support

Has anyone had success transcoding video files to a Samsung BD-D5700 Blu-ray player? I've tried just about every profile in Mezzmo and the only one that seems to work is the profile for Playstation 3, but it has intermittent problems (plays sometimes, sometimes it doesn't, navigation hangs, etc.). I was able to play a .rmvb file on the Samsung D5700 using the Playstation 3 profile, so I know transcoding is works (Samsung doesn't support Real Media). I have the latest Samsung firmware to date and I'm running a full paid version of Mezzmo on an i7 990 (6 core) Intel processor, 24GB of memory, 8TB of disk space (7200 RPM), Windows 7 (64 bit) on a gigabit network. I can transcode HD quality perfectly fine to my Samsung TV, Samsung BD-C7500, Xbox 360, iPhone, Android and WD TV Live.....but this stupid Samsung D5700 just doesn't want to accept 'transcoded' files!

If I stream files to the Samsung from Windows Media Center, it works fine, but Windows Media Center doesn't support .mkv and .rmvb files by default (it will work with a hack/workaround). Windows Media Center isn't capable of transcoding, so I don't want to use it.

I also own a paid Pro Version of TVersity and I built a profile for the Samsung BD-D5700, but transcoding doesn't seem to work well either. I'm transcoding the files to a supported codec according to Samsung's product documentation.

MediaTomb on Ubuntu Linux streams MPEG4 files perfectly to the Samsung BD-D5700.

When I run debugging in other media servers or do a packet capture, the device is presenting itself to the media server as D5700.

Any tips or suggestions will help. Thanks!

I replied to your other post in another thread as follows:

We have had a several users complain about the DLNA implementation in this model. It appears to quite different to other Samsung BDP models.

Please set the device profile to "Samsung BDP" and then delete your transcoded files using the Transcoding Settings dialog. Next, enable logging (see this thread: http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread...nostic-logging) then start your Mezzmo server. Using your D5700, connect to Mezzmo and try playing some files. When some files fail to play, stop your Mezzmo server and zip up all the logs and send them to us at support [at] conceiva [dot] com. We'll investigate what is happening once we get your logs.

    Paul,

Thank you for the quick response. I apologize for the duplicate posts, I later felt it was best for me to post a new thread for this topic.

I will perform the steps to collect the logs and upload them as you mentioned.

For what it's worth, I HAVE NOTICED something specific to the Samsung BD-D5700... I have TVersity configured to "Transcode Always". I can stream a supported codec such as MPEG2 to the D5700 and it will play it....ONLY IF it's a small file with less than 1 minute of video (small family clips from Sony camcorder). If I play a longer length file of the exact same codec (long family clips from Sony camcorder), the Samsung D5700 errors and says, "Unsupported Video Codec". The codec used with the family clips are Video: MPEG2 & Audio: AC3. I can transcode the same files to MPEG1 or MPEG4 and they behave the same way (short length works and long length fails)!!! I realize these findings were with TVersity and not Mezzmo, but please keep these findings in mind as you debug the logs.

I may post a separate thread for this, but I want to know when Mezzmo will be compiled as a 64 bit binary. Mezzmo has a higher CPU utilization than TVersity (not bad - only a 10% difference). I run them both on the same server, same media library, but I don't run both services simultaneously. You saw the hardware specs of my media server, so I know I have enough horse power to stream HD video to multiple devices at the same time (i7 990 (6 cores / 12 threads) Intel processor w/ 24GB Memory). I configured the temp directory for transcoded files to be placed into a dedicated 7200 RPM drive to reduce disk I/O contention and improve performance. I want to get rid of TVersity and start using Mezzmo as Mezzmo appears to be a much more polished product with better support. I paid for Mezzmo and TVersity, but I'm not sure I like the extra CPU usage that Mezzmo uses. I might be wrong, but I believe the performance will improve once Mezzmo is compiled as a 64 bit binary.

Thanks for the additional information about using your D5700 and Tversity. We'll work with you to create a device profile that matches the formats that the D5700 can play.

We don't have any plans to create a 64-bit native version of Mezzmo. Mezzmo runs fine on 64-bit systems now. In terms of performance improvements or CPU over-utilization, I think there is much more for us (Mezzmo developers) to gain by optimizing our code within Mezzmo so that it does not consume unnecessary CPU. We're always looking into this and you may see some improvements in the new version that we're releasing shortly.

    Paul,

I apologize I haven't generated and uploaded logs to support yet. I replied on a separate thread with the following conclusion:

The problem is with the Samsung BD-D5700 device and not Mezzmo! The Samsung BD-D5700 does not want to play 'transcoded' files!

My older Samsung products don't support as many codecs as the D5700, but I can transcode/stream EVERYTHING to the older Samsung products through Mezzmo. The new Samsung BD-D5700 supports a lot of codecs and formats such as .mkv. I have a media library with tons of random codecs and file formats, I installed Serviio (free version), selected the 'Samsung C/D Series profile' and 80% of my library works on the D5700! If I disable transcoding in TVersity (paid pro version), I can play about 80% of my library as well. I haven't tried disabling transcoding in Mezzmo for this device, but I imagine that it will work. The problem is, I WANT transcoding to work for the D5700 so it will play 100% of my library!

Based off of hours and hours of testing with different Media Servers on Windows and Ubuntu Linux, I have a feeling that Samsung did something like this for DLNA in the D5700... "The new Samsung BD-D5700 supports so many codecs that anytime files are streamed to it, the D5700 will have to see the 'complete file' before playing it". I might be wrong, but this is just a guess. Why do you ask?... If I take a MPEG2 file (supported by D5700) and transcode it to MPEG4 (supported by D5700) it doesn't work! If I disable transcoding, the file plays perfectly.

Thanks for letting us know. We'll keep watching for any firmware updates for the D5700 and see if there have been any improvements with DLNA streaming.
