Question Temporary Freezing, then Resume - Anyone Else?

Lately (with v2.4.4 and newer, possibly before 2.4.4) I've noticed an issue with temporary freezing of streamed video files, often ones that are natively supported by my Sony BDP-S370 bluray player. The video and audio will simply freeze at random points, time will keep ticking away on the counter, then after some time (usually 10 seconds to a minute) playback will resume with the counter jumping back to the point where it had previously left off. I have sent logs, ffmpeg info, etc. to the Conceiva guys to figure this one out, but I'm curious, has anyone else experienced this issue? It seems to be very sporadic, in that some movies play through without the slightest glitch, while others with the exact video and audio codec base may freeze multiple times throughout. I believe this happened a couple times with my PS3 quite awhile back as well, but certainly not to the same degree as with the BDP.

Anyone else? I'd really like to troubleshoot this to better understand if it's a hardware configuration or Mezzmo issue. Either way, it makes it almost impossible to watch some movies...

If you could send the freezing logs with the latest 2.5 we'll continue looking at this. The file's codecs may look the same, but internally there could be different encoding techniques, such as varying numbers of b-frames or refs or whatever else, depending on the format.

It would also be great if you could send one of the freezing files to us as well, as it may help in reproducing this issue (if it's a Mezzmo or a BDP issue).

Thanks Dennis, I'll see what I can do. I also don't want to discount the possibility that it might be a network issue. If this were the case, would it be clearly apparent in the logs?

Network issues are hard to spot in the logs, since we don't know why the device disconnects (in most cases). The best option is to run a wire when testing such things. If freezing still occurs, it's more likely not be a network issue in this case (unless the wire itself or the router are bad).

Also we need to make sure that no software on your PC is causing this, such as an antivirus, firewall, malware detector or anything else that may be accessing the network or your disks.

Ok, everything's wired on a gigabit network, so I'll assume it's not network related. I'll see what I can get for logs with 2.5.0.

It could also be the router or other software... Let's see if the logs will give us any clues though.

Just to follow up, it turns out this isn't a Mezzmo issue since other media server software packages are exhibiting the same issue. Thanks Dennis for helping me come to this conclusion, although I have some work ahead of me to track down the culprit (gigabit router is now gone, problem remains). Anyone who can offer advice, I'm all ears!
