Default Newbie: Adding new file suffix for download

I saw this utility on BitsDuJuer and it is exactly what I have been looking for! I immediately downloaded the trial in anticipation of the special price offer.

I've installed it in to FF 11 using the instructions found here and it is working great except I can't seem to add a new suffix so that it is recognized by DownloadStudio and downloaded. I also disabled the download manager addins I was using before to avoid any conflicts.

I did notice the items in the right click popup list look like there may be an issue there. They all begin with & and have rather cryptic descriptions. Does this sound correct?

I added the suffix to the compressed file type set. The suffix is .saf which is a proprietary compressed format that I download often. I assumed this would make DS recognize and process it like any other compressed file but no luck.

What is the correct procedure (step by step) to accomplish this?

I'm really looking forward to having this tool. One other question; what is the licensing policy? I'm a software developer myself and so I have two desktop workstations, two laptops, and a boatload of VMs. I like to keep these kind of tools installed consistently on each system I use. I am the exclusive sole users of these systems. How many licenses would I need? Obviously I'm hoping it is licensed by user and not by install which would probably be a deal breaker for me unless there is some kind of 5-10 install pack available at a reasonable price.

    Thanks! - KEM

I seem to have cleared this issue up by restarting DS and FF so please ignore this question.

Another update: I have discovered that it is working fine in IE but not FF 11. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi KEM,

With the licensing question, if you are not going to be using multiple copies of DownloadStudio at the same time, then we allow our users to install it on multiple computers. If multiiple computers are going to be using DownloadStudio simultaneously then we require users to purchase multiple licenses. You can find details about volume license packs here:

    http://www.conceiva.com/buy/volumepricing.asp

I added the suffix to the compressed file type set. The suffix is .saf which is a proprietary compressed format that I download often. I assumed this would make DS recognize and process it like any other compressed file but no luck.
In firefox the files that are caught by click monitoring and sent to DownloadStudio to be downloaded are set in the DownloadStudio Firefox plugin options, which is set from within firefox (see image below). Unfortunately at the moment in our Firefox plugin there is no way to change the list of types of files to be caught.

I hope this answers your questions.

I really can't see myself using it on multiple computer at the same time, thanks for the clarification. Just to be sure, I ordered 2 licenses.

    > In firefox the files that are caught by click monitoring and sent to DownloadStudio to be downloaded are set in the DownloadStudio Firefox plugin options

That is consistent with my testing. Hopefully this can be addressed in a future update since it significantly impairs the convenience of day-today use. Obviously you recognize the need for this since it has been incorporated into the IE functionality.

I've also noticed the FF 11 add-on has a number of other "quirks". Hopefully the overall robustness and functionality will be improved. It almost seems like FF support was an afterthought.

Finally I don't seem to be able to configure what modifier key is used to "force" DS to recognize and download when I click on a link. Ctrl-Click is the default to tell FF to open a link in a new tab which I also use a lot. I know I can turn the click monitoring on/off but I'd like to just leave it on all the time. As it is now I'm forced to turn it off to use FF Ctrl-Click and then back on when I want to do a force download of a link.

Are my comments here sufficient to get these requests on the enhancement request list or do you have a formal mechanism in place where I need to do that?

Thanks and I'm looking forward to using the product!

Thanks for your feedback and we'll add your thoughts into our development task database. We'll certainly look into improving DownloadStudio's Firefox add-on.

It's been quite a while since I uninstalled DS because of the weaknesses in the FF add-on. I saw it coming up as a special on BDJ again and it reminded me that I should check to see if the issue regarding the ability to specify the file extensions in FF had been addressed so I downloaded the current installer and the recent FF "fix" posted in this forum.

As far as I can tell the FF extension issue has not been addressed yet. In fact, it doesn't look like there has been a single update to the software in all this time. I don't even have the old installer since I had uninstalled the product, can that be right? If so, is DS being actively developed/maintained?

In addition I went to a YouTube video page and tried every method I could find to download the video from the page (in FF) with no success at all.

It's entirely possible I'm not following the correct procedure for downloading the video, I'm going to experiment with that some more today. Can you please confirm that the FF extension specification issue has still not been addressed? If that is the case can you offer any estimated date this will be addressed? I'd like to use the software but until it can meet all of my day to day downloading requirements I'm going to have to go back to my other solution again.

I just tried downloading a YouTube video in IE and it doesn't seem to work either. Is YT video download using DS working at all? If so is there a step-by-step set of instructions for "dummies" that I can follow?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Firstly I can assure you DownloadStudio is still being developed and a new version will be out in the near future.

With YouTube if you apply the following patch you should be able to download YouTube URL's simply by pasting the URL of the YouTube page into DownloadStudio.

    http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread...io-7-0-5-users

For example, after applying the above patch, you should be able to copy a URL, like, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCrRZrA-iNE into a new DownloadStudio job and the video will be downloaded.

With Firefox, our add-on has only had compatibility issues with the latest version of Firefox fixed, no functionality changes. If you want more powerful features we recommend using the Firefox FlashGot add-on. It will still pass downloads to DownloadStudio, however offers more features than the DownloadStudio Firefox add-on. You can read more about FlashGot at http://flashgot.net/.
