Thread: metadata update during folder browsing

Default metadata update during folder browsing

I can remember that earlier versions of Mezzmo updated the metadata (of new files) as soon as I browsed to the folder with my TV. Especially for newly added movie files with external subtitles this is very helpful. At the moment I have to use the Mezzmo GUI to go to that folder and forcing a metadata update in this way. The library maintenance will of course also update the metadata, but sometimes I want to watch new stuff before the scheduled maintenance

Another small issue related to the metadata:
The documentation lists several folder structures that are recognized for movies or series. Could the following format also be added?

    x:\mystuff\series\Stargate\S01E01\xyz.mkv

The filename would not be so important, because its format changes sometimes. But the important information like series title, season and episode number would be easy to extract.

Thanks for the feedback. When you browse into a new folder of files on your device, Mezzmo gets the list of files and adds them into your Mezzmo database with the key media information (video format, resolution, etc.). This is done almost immediately, so you can browse the folder immediately. But some metadata information will may be missing upon your first browsing of the folder. Mezzmo also kicks off several threads to get related this metadata information - namely, subtitles, artwork and movie/TV series information. This information will be retrieved in the subsequent seconds or minutes - depending how many files have to be retrieved, types of files, speed of access to in the internet, etc. If you wait a minute or so, and then go back a folder and go back into the folder on your device, you should see some or all of the information (including subtitles, artwork, etc.) starting to appear.

Regarding the file path and metadata, the file path is supported by the current version of Mezzmo (v3.2.0.0) and Mezzmo searches TheTVDB for this metadata. The reason for no matching is since the series is actually called "StarGate SG-1" and Mezzmo uses exact matching on the series names from the results returned from TheTVDB. We'll fix that up in an upcoming version. Thanks for letting us know.

Ok, I'm pretty sure it is not working that way but I will test it again.

    - copy new movie (with external subtitles) to folder X
    - browse with TV to folder X
    - Mezzmo starts retrieving metadata?
    - wait a little
    - browse again to that folder
    - be happy with working subtitles?

So, if I have the Mezzmo GUI open I should see these update activities in the status frame, right? just like when I start a library maintenance or browse to that folder with the Mezzmo GUI?

Regarding the folder structure, even when the folder is named exactly like Mezzmo would retrieve it from TheTVDB, the series name was always extracted from the filename. For example, x:\series\Rookie Blue\S01E01\xyz-rookie-s01e01.mkv, Mezzmo will call the series "xyz rookie".
I have now added a series.xml to the main folder of the series, so that the series name is correctly assigned by Mezzmo, but the metadata for each episode is still not retrieved from TheTVDB. I can live with that, as the metadata for each episode is not that important for me, as long as the series name is correct.

No - the Mezzmo application will not show this since the request to gather the metadata information has come from Mezzmo server and it is collecting the information (not Mezzmo application). BTW: Mezzmo does not need to be running when you are browsing and streaming media to your device. Let us know how you go with your test.

Ok, back with some test results.
    • browsing to the folder triggers some update methods. "Recently added", the series playlist, etc. are updated with the new episode
    • In one or two of my eight tests, the metadata got fully updated. Thumbnail, subtitles, etc.
    • In the other cases, only the filename and show name was added. No thumbnail and no subtitles.
    • Waited for several minutes to be extra sure and double checked the metadata are still missing.
    • As soon as I start or restart the Mezzmo Application, I can see some activities popping up in the status frame and the missing metadata are updated.

I have several log files from the tests if you want them.

Another unrelated problem also happened two times during the tests. My Samsung TV/Monitor (T27B550) crashed upon entering a folder. I don't know if some communication problems could be the cause or just some bugs in the Samsung firmware

Update: The Samsung crashed during browsing through the displayed folder list. I did not even try to enter a new folder, so I don't think this problem is related to Mezzmo
