Default Rewind not possible during DVD ISO playback?

Hi, I'm not able to rewind when playing dvd iso images. Is this feature not supported by Mezzmo for iso images or am I missing something? Thanks for help.

    Hi Misiak,
It is not a function of Mezzmo as much as it is of the device you are playing to. But even if it does support rewind there can be problems. For instance all of my playback devices are Sony BDP 3xxx players. (I standardized to make my life easier). The Sony does support rewind and most often it does work. But I found that DVDs in particular can be a problem. I do not use ISOs but instead used to rid to a single VOB file. Essentially a DVD, but a much larger file without menus. While it did work sometimes the movie would not rewind correctly. I found that often when that was the case the movie duration was also incorrect. Sometimes it was close but sometimes a 2 hour movie would say it was 27 seconds long (or something ridiculous). I did a lot of searching and what I found is that some DVDs when they are made do not follow the rules. One of the things that DVDs have is a timing signal inside the container. It was meant so that everything could be synchronized. But as the players got better they no longer needed that signal. Some DVD makers no longer care about the signal after the first few seconds since the players by then will play the disc anyway. Now the problem became on that the Sony BDP does use the signal to rewind and FF through the video under DLNA. What I do now is to re-encode the VOB file as an mpg and in the process write a valid timing signal. The SW that I use will not work on an ISO so I won't bother mentioning it. But if you want to play around let me know. They do have a free trial to experiment with.

Hi John, thanks for reply. It is strange because I have Samsung F8000 series and it is capable of processing a really big range of video codecs and containers. In particular, DVD ISO is a mpeg file and usually I have no problems with mpeg files. This problem I have is .vob file. Rewind functionality is simply not supported (I get this message from TV when I try to move forward or back). In the past I had a problem with another DLNA server with .m2ts files - the TV was not able to rewind these files. However, with Mezzmo it just works... Therefore I think this could be a DLNA server related issue. But you right that the length of dvd iso is not correct. I always noticed this. So maybe it is really related to DVD files itself and to an ISO. In any case, I think this is some problem with media server. And yes, re-encoding is a possibility but I don't want to do that. Btw, I've noticed that even I've forced to re-encode dvd files to h264, the rewind functionality is still not available. I wonder why... Could be because of that missing timing signal you've talked about? Maybe someone from developers team could write a opinion. Thx.

    Hi Misiak,

We've found that Samsung support for FF/REW does vary between models and also video formats. Most older Samsung TV models (B/C-series) don't support FF/REW via the FF/REW buttons on your remote control and you must use Chaptering (Mezzmo supports this automatically) or the left/right buttons on your remote control to move in increments. Later Samsung models (D/E-series) do have Chaptering and introduced Time Search which allows you to move around the video file more easily, but time search was limited to certain video formats.

We're still learning video seeking capabilities about the new F-series. You should be able to use Time Search. Does this work? See http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread...our-Samsung-TV for more details.

    Hi Paul, thanks for reply.

Usually I have no problems to use rewind controls or time search with other formats. Seems it does not work only with DVD iso files. I suppose .iso is not a problem so then problem has to be with .vob files itself. With those files I don't have "Time Search" function available at all. It's simply hidden. It is not so critical as I don't watch many DVD videos but would be nice if seeking capabilities work fine also for F series and DVD files

Thanks for support, it is very appreciated.

OK - understand the problem now. Your DVD ISO and VOB files are MPEG-2 video format that Mezzmo server streams directly to your Samsung TV since it supports playing MPEG-2 natively. We know that Samsung D/E-series don't let you seek (FF/REW) when you are streaming MPEG-2 videos. Surprisingly, it seems the new Samsung F-series TVs have the same limitation My only suggestion for you is to pre-transcode these files to another format and that will let you FF/REW. See this pre-transcoding FAQ for details - http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread...nscoding-Files.

Hi Paul, yes this also was my first impression that TV is not able to seek for MPEG-2 videos. Shame on Samsung for this. But what is really strange that it does not work even I force trans-coding to matroska h.264 codec. Could it be because video is trans-coded on the fly? Really strange...

Try pre-transcoding the MPEG-2 video to MKV before streaming and then see how you go. See this FAQ to pre-transcode - http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread...nscoding-Files. Let us know how you go.

Hi Paul, yes, once I've pre-transcoded the video then time search is available and I can rewind. Seems this is the only way. It is possible to force on-the-fly encoding for particular movies? Because pre-transcoding can take lot of time and I did not find a way in mezzmo to force it. Is the only way to edit the profile file and set the transcoding options there? Maybe this would be a good improvement

    Hi Michal,

OK - you have confirmed that the problem is in Samsung TV firmware. Thanks for doing that. We can provide you with a tweaked Samsung F device profile so that it transcodes MPEG-2 to another format. Email us and we'll provide it to you.
