Default Mezzmo Crashes (Program Stopped responding)

Hi, I have issues with my installation of Mezzmo (Full version)
I have Mezzmo installed on Windows 7 64bit (Ultimate)

When using the program (Browsing settings and such) Mezzmo sometimes crashes and Windows tells me Mezzmo stopped responding.
The same happens if I start the mediaserver and close the GUI, and try to access/play media from my devices (Samsung TV UE40B7070, Samsung TV LE46B655, Ipod Touch)
In general I can't get mezzmo running for a longer time, but sometimes i manage to play media and that works, so I dont really know where to start troubleshooting.
I have not made any changes to the default settings and i have also deleted te mezzmo.db file to recreate my database (I first thougt that the crashes might be due to a very large media archive or some issues creating thumbnails on some video files).
But since I can recreate the crash with a 'clean' mezzmo.db im stuck.

I have also seen some issues with my CPU getting stuck at 100% when playing video, but at the moment im happy to have the software running without chrashing.
    Please advice.
    /Richard

    Lightbulb Update

I think I need to update some of my problem desciptions.
I have made a complete uninstall of Mezzmo and installed it oncemore,
Now I have no issues with crashes, so far.
I'm still thinking that the crashes might be due to some media (.avi file) might be the reason for the crashes, I have only added a few of my media directories and I have not seen any crashes so far.

I will validate some more and then proceed by adding more folders to my directory.
Is there a way to find out if any (possible damaged) .avi file could cause the crashes?
I have some folders that I have not added yet (they were added before my reinstall) and I will try to add them to see what happens. They contain ~500 files, (.avi and .mkv) and another folder that contains ~400 files and subfolders. (.avi, .mkv and .mpeg)

It's just a theory that it might be due to some damaged or wierd file that caused the crashes i experienced, so I might be trying to solve this the wrong way.

Perhaps (I hope) the reinstall solved everything, but I will update here as soon as I have something new to add

    [UPDATE]

I added my ~500 file video directory and now Mezzmo crashes when i start it, (it runs up to one minute after startup and the win tells me it stopped working)
The active system task is Getting Thumbnails.

I managed to remove my recentlly added directory, but the System Task is still there.
(System task Getting video thumbnails: 379 files remaining)
    And the crash continues.

So now im guessing that a complete reinstall will solve my problem, until i add the folder once more.
Stopping the server will not prevent the crashes.

    /Richard

Yes, most probably it's a bad file, but what you actually want to delete is not the Mezzmo.db, but all the other .db files in that folder. That should let you keep you library and prevent crashes at startup.

We've fixed at least one crash issue here that would occur on some specific music files with embedded thumbnails, so maybe that's what you're experiencing as well. Or are you only importing movies?

It may help if you turn on logging (see this thread: http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread...nostic-logging), then try to run Mezzmo again and wait for it to crash. After that please send the logs to support (at) conceiva (dot) com and maybe we'll be able to narrow it down to a specific file, which will allow us to fix it.

    Hi Dennis,
The folder im adding only contains video files. And to be sure that video files are the only thing added i use the filter option upon adding the folders.

I will turn on logging, reproduce the crashes and send the logfiles to you.
I might have other 'damaged' files aswell, in other folders, since adding my other big video directory cause the same behavour.

Is there any known issues with certain codex/video filetypes that i should keep my eyes open for?

So it would be nice to have a 'standard' procedure to find out what files are causing the crashes (and ofcourse in the long run, with the help you you, the answer to why).

    Thanks,
    Richard

    Hi Richard,

Mezzmo does not use any codecs that are on your system, so crashes most likely come when the third-party library that we use (FFmpeg) crashes. We update FFmpeg with almost each Mezzmo update and also test it in-house on a weekly basis with new builds to see if any of the bugs that are relevant for us are fixed or not.

The logs may help us narrow it down of course, so I'll look forward to those, if you have a chance to send them in. A future update will also have better facilities to diagnose these crashes, so it'll help us pinpoint the problems better.

Oh, perhaps its time to update the rest of you forum readers on this matter, perhaps some of you encounter the same problem.

So. My Mezzmo was crashing all the time and if I reinstalled Mezzmo it would be a good little software and behave as expected... until I started to add some of my Video directories.
Ok, some of my smaller directories did not create any crashes, but with the internet and all, I have for some reason accumulated some quite big directories of video.
(If you are MAFIAA™ READ the following.. I really LOVE my web camera, I record every minute of my life, T.H.A.T is why I have such a huge video dir.)
    Anyway..

What I could see was that Mezzmo would start to count up the files adding and the Thumbnail task counting up and then down, the goal is to count down to 0 to finish.
What happened for me was that it got stuck on some file and then Mezzmo crashed.
And restarting Mezzmo would only give me a crash again, removing the file did not help since I guess I had a corrupt thumbnail/Mezzmo database at this point.
What I could do was to delete the Mezzmo database files and try again.

Here in lie my solution. I was pretty sure that I had one or several corrupt video files and I had to find out witch one, this could be a quite devious task since I had a huge number of files in the directory i added,
(I'm a sucker for recording my life.. remember?).
Well the task was not easy in it self and required some time behind my computer but, hey, it resulted in a working Mezzmo server so who am I to complain.

Ok, enough trying to be witty.
I enabled Logging and restarted my server.
Added my video folder and waited for the crash.
In the log for Mezzmo.exe I could find a lot of activity when adding video files, but there was one thing i had to keep my eyes open for.

Example of a successfully thumbnail creation.
    1163 - Aug 19 19:28:01.680 - (1282238881,680) - [00] - <00> - THUMB> Trying: C:\Program Files (x86)\Conceiva\Mezzmo\ffmpeg.exe -ss 45 -r 1 -skip_idct none -skip_frame none -skip_loop_filter none -i "f:\mylife\imborn.avi" -ss 3 -deinterlace -an -sn -vframes 1 "C:\Users\Richard\AppData\Local\Temp\FTF9900.tmp.p ng"

    1166 - Aug 19 19:28:02.500 - (1282238882,500) - [00] - <00> - THUMB> Creating video thumbnail: f:\mylife\myfirststeps : 406 ms : SUCCESS

    Okey, all fine and dandy.
What i needed to look for is the last of the THUMB> creation line, the one WITHOUT a SUCCESS line after it. It would be the last one of them since well… Mezzmo crashes.

    1167 - Aug 19 19:28:02.527 - (1282238882,527) - [00] - <00> - THUMB> Trying: C:\Program Files (x86)\Conceiva\Mezzmo\ffmpeg.exe -ss 45 -r 1 -skip_idct none -skip_frame none -skip_loop_filter none -i "f:\mylife\BigFootProof.mpg" -ss 3 -deinterlace -an -sn -vframes 1 "C:\Users\Richard\AppData\Local\Temp\FTF9C5C.tmp.p ng"

Looking… See! No SUCCESS line after this one.. I have found my 'bad' file!
In my case it was a .MPG file I tried to add and it was this file that created all my problems. Actually I had a total of eleven 'corrupt' files, and they were all .MPG files, so guess what format I'm avoiding in the future?
Well to be honest a lot of my other .MPG files were added successful so they are not all bad.
Since Mezzmo got stuck on that file I had to go through the steps of removing the bad file from my computer, deleting the Mezzmo database files, add the folders again and wait for the next file to create the crash thus removing that one to.
And so on, until I have a clean and poltergeist free video archive.

Dennis told me that he did not encounter the same problem with the files as I had, (no crashing), even though he could see that the file in it self was not good, (The dimensions was reported as 54000x9). But he was running a newer version of ffmpeg than me, so perhaps this is no real isse in the future releases.
The file played fine in VLC and streamed fine with Samsung PC Share Manager 2.33 but Windows media player did not want to open this file and version 4.2 of Samsung PSM crashed aswell when trying to update the database (creating thumbnails as well im guessing).

Anyway, perhaps somone finds this of interest.

Looking forward to the next release witch I understand is not too far away!
