    Default v3.3.1 upgrade

I completed my upgrade yesterday from Mezzmo 2.7 1 to 3.3.1. So far things are working pretty good and I like many of the new features. I've run into 3 items so far that I'll need some support help with.

    1. The Album/Artist field has been removed from the properties tab for video files. I suspect that probably shouldn't have been there in v2.7.1 but I had used it for a Smart playlist and now with it no longer available I can't add files to the playlist. I basically was using it as a user definable field in the database and the Smart playlist said if Album/Artist field contains xyz add it to the playlist.

So my question is was this omitted in 3.3.1 by error or it was intentional and I will now have attributes in the database for these video files that can't be accessed ? It isn't a big deal but this got me to thinking about a really valuable feature for Mezzmo for user definable attributes that we could use any way we want but would primarily be used for Smart playlists. So maybe have each file have up to 3 user definable fields and we could use them in Smart playlists. We could even use those for getting rid of noisy words. Example if userdef1 does not contain "the" . For the noisy wod videos we put "the" in the userdef1 attribute field. There are many other possibilities here. I used album/artist for creating personal favorites for my wife and I.

    2. Playlist processing has gotten slower but my database has grown significantly in size from around 200meg to 800meg. I did a compact and it shrunk slightly. This isn't a big deal exccept I have a system task that when processing changes shows "Processing Active Playlists 5 Remaining" that will be on the screen for many minutes before dissappearing. I'll grab some logs and mail them off. It didn't fo this with 2.7.1.

    3. The Samsung F profile won't work with my new Samsung UN46F6300AF TV. The TV starts to load the video files, sticks on loading and then eventually gives up and powers off. If I switch the TV to the Netgear NEO-550 profile it loads them quickly, plays videos fine but I don't have any FF/RW or pause controls. I'll zip up some logs with the Samsung F profile hanging and mail them off. I'll also play with the profile a bit to see which attribute is causing it to hang.

Thanks for the feedback. Some answers:

    1. We did remove the Album Artist field for videos since it is unrelated to videos. We did not realize that quite a few users have been using it for other purposes Our development plan is that the next version of Mezzmo will include many more new fields and I am sure this will cater for your searching/organizing needs. We are working towards releasing this by the end of the month, so I hope you can wait until then

    2. Active playlist processing is a new system task in Mezzmo v3.x and it will be new to you since you have moved from Mezzmo v2.x. Whenever there are changes to your files' metadata in Mezzmo, Mezzmo will begin updating the active playlists so they are up-to-date. This happens in the background as a system task - you can continue to use Mezzmo and stream your files while this is processing. Your database may have increased in size since we are now collecting better quality artwork for files and folders/playlists.

    3. We'll analyze your logs regarding the Samsung F issue and respond via email.

I had the same issue with a Samsung F so I thought I'd tell you what worked for me. It turned out that I had accidentally set the TV to show items sorted by title rather than folder. I have >13,000 videos and a 4Gb database, so it couldn't cope.

I solved the problem by setting up a temporary instance of Mezzmo on another machine with only one item shared. Then I could access that through the TV and switch it back to folder view. Everything was fine after that. Another solution would have been to temporarily stop sharing most of the content.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. In my case my Samsung F works with Mezzmo using a diffrent profile.

I use it much like it would be used for music: to indicate the single artist most directly associated with the item. For movies, there usually is none. (Not counting directors, since the Creator field works fine for them. In Mezzmo 3.2 and prior, the Artist field is useless for videos.) It works for stand-up comedy, concerts, and movies that are thought of more as a group (e.g., The Marx Brothers) than as independent titles. Of course, I could just make simple playlists and add the items, but using an Active Playlist and setting the Album Artist field seems cleaner.

Thanks for the feedback. We'll re-expose the album artist field for the next upcoming release so you can continue to use it That will give us the development time to add all the extra fields into the next major version of Mezzmo that we're working on now (and these extra fields will give you the flexibility and power for your organizing your files the way you want).

With a lot of help from Paul, we determined that the issue was in fact the Samsung F client being confused and was looping through the database until it would ultimately crash and reboot the TV. I presume it looped until it ran out of memory. The trick suggested here of a new instance of Mezzmo was close to the answer. In this case Paul had be rename the production database and allow Mezzmo to create a new one. Then I added a fw files and had the Samsung F connect. Once I did that everything seemed to work fine. While it previously said it was in folder view, the other options of tile and date never showed up with the original database and profile. Once I used the temporary new database everything showed up on the Samsung client. I reselected folder view, then shut down Mezzmo, put my original database back and presto, everything works. The 10 second skip, pause and time search features all work. As well the Samsung client also displays the coverart. Previously it just displayed generic icons.

Many thanks to Paul for his terrific support.
