    Default XBMC ignores <Sorttitle/>

I have my files and playlists set up with <sorttitle>. Mezzmo recognizes it just fine and populates the libraries properly in Mezzmo and in Mezzmo Android, but XBMC is ignoring them. For instance, I have Batman Begins from The Dark Knight series set as "DarkKnight01" and The Dark Knight set as "DarkKnight02". If I go to all movies Batman Begins still shows up alphabetically in the B's. If I go to the 'rolodex' where the movies are broken down by letter, Batman Begins shows up (appropriately) in the D's because Mezzmo's Smart Playlist sorts it that way, but is the very first entry in all of the D's because XBMC sorts the titles in 'D' alphabetically and Batman Begins comes before anything that starts with a 'D'.

Is this an issue that can be resolved with the Device Profile or is it something where XBMC/Kodi is just failing to recognize the Sorttitle at all from Mezzmo?

    --Update--
Looks like an XBMC/Kodi issue. I installed Plex to see how XBMC handles another UPnP server and aside from the fact that Plex didn't populate any art or metadata except Duration, Year and Title, it didn't sort by the <sorttitle> field either.

If you are seeing the list of files correctly in Mezzmo (Windows) app, Mezzmo (Android) app and other devices/apps on your home network - but not on XBMC, then it suggests that XBMC is sorting the list itself. You can email us a set of logs if you wish to confirm that Mezzmo server is delivering the list of files in the correct order.

I am fairly sure that Mezzmo is delivering the <sorttitle> info or the Android app wouldn't be correct, I assume? I can send the logs if you aren't sure. Would I just clear the logs, turn on logging, browse with XBMC, turn off the logging, zip and send?

So I was messing around with this a little further. I installed Cyberlink PowerDVD just to see how it handled the metadata transfer of <sorttitle> and it appears to ignore it as well, so I am just going to chalk this up as a limitation of DLNA/UPnP.

With that in mind, I don't know how to achieve my goal.

I want to have a playlist that organizes the movies Rolodex style but ignores "a", "the", "an".

To clarify my example above using the Dark Knight Series Title <Sorttitle>:

    Batman Begins <Dark Knight Collection01>
The Dark Knight <Dark Knight Collection02>
The Dark Knight Rises (Dark Knight Collection03>

If I choose to sort my Active Playlist to <Group by First Letter> and set the sort by to <sorttitle> then Mezzmo appropriately sticks all three in the D folder. So far so good.
But when I go to XBMC and pull up the D folder I get this:

    Batman Begins
    Dallas Buyer's Club
    Damnation
    Dances With Wolves
    The Dark Knight
    The Dark Knight Rises

XBMC doesn't recognize sort order and just stuffs everything in the folder in alphabetical order, ignoring the prefixes "a", "an", "the".

I posted the issue in the XBMC forum but didn't get any responses. I also installed Cyberlink PowerDVD on a PC just to see how it handled it and it does not recognize <sorttitle> either and insists on sorting everything by <title> the way that XBMC does with UPnP sources.

So I thought, "Well Mezzmo has a feature to ignore "a", "an, "the" so I will just enable that and just live with everything sorted by <title>."

I messed with it for the better part of three hours of changing settings and Maintain Library before I realized that the ignore prefix setting in Mezzmo has nothing to do with <title> but only applies when I choose to sort the library by <sorttitle>.

So now I am back to square one. If there's a way to ignore it in <sorttitle> and XBMC can ignore it in <title> then I would think there has to be a way to ignore "a", "an", "the" in Mezzmo when you sort by <title>, doesn't there? Otherwise I am stuck with a whole bunch of movies in the 'A' folder that start with "a" & "an" and a third of my movie collection stuck in the T folder because they begin with "the".

    Any ideas?

Also, as a side note. It seems like I have to rerun a Maintain Library every time a make change for the changes to reflect on Active Playlists but Smart Playlists seem to respond immediately to changes. Is this normal?

Sorry, I understand your thoughts now & you may have a misunderstanding on the use of sort titles. Just to clarify - Mezzmo server never delivers sort title as a UPnP / DLNA tag to devices. Rather it is just another metadata field that you can use to sort your playlists / folders. So, if you set the "Sort by" setting for your playlist / folder to be "Sort Title (Ascending)" or "Sort Title (Descending)", then Mezzmo will use that field to sort your playlist / folder. Mezzmo does this sorting before it lists the files in a playlist / folder in your Mezzmo (Windows) app and before it streams the list of files to your devices.

Note: You will see your files sorted using the 'Sort by' setting in Mezzmo (Windows) app when you are viewing your files in Large, Medium or Small thumbnail views. If you are viewing your files in Details view, then you may have sorted your files using one of the Detail view's column headers. This column sorting will override your playlist 'Sort by' setting in Mezzmo (Windows) app.

Most devices will list the files in the order that the list of files have been delivered to it by a media server - so this lets you use the "Sort by" setting for your folder / playlist to get your files listed on your devices as you wish. However, we've found a few devices that do their own sorting (typically alphabetic order) within their firmware - e.g. recent Samsung TV & BDP models do this. This is a silly firmware feature since users can no longer get files listed in date order, track order, etc. and also means that the device needs to get the complete list of files delivered to it before it will sort & display them (= slow). It appears from your posts that XBMC may also be doing the same. We do have a workaround for this using the %FILECOUNTER% keyword in your Display Titles; see this FAQ - http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread...8294#post28294

Tried the Filecounter method and works much better than I thought. The leading filecount ## is not obtrusive and I didn't realize that Mezzmo dynamically assigns the # without any input from the user.

    Pretty Slick workaround.

Glad it works well for you. Hopefully XBMC provide a "no-sort" setting in the future so you don't have to do this.

Got some good news. One of the developers for Kodi(XBMC) replied and said it was a pretty reasonable request although he said he couldn't understand why I would use Mezzmo instead of Kodi's internal library setup. I gave him a few reasons but maybe I should have just said "because they do library management and media service as well as you do playback and HTPC."

Crossing fingers we will see NO SORT in an update sooner rather than later.
