    Default Forcing DTS to AC3/DD5.1 breaks ffwd/rewind and gives incorrect duration

    I'm using a Samsung E series TV (E550) with the E Series Profile and have a Playbar which does not support DTS connected to it. Therefore, I wanted to ensure that I get the audio as DD5.1/AC3.

    Following the post here: http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread...-transcode-AC3 I removed the only entry of:
    <format id="dts">
    </format>

    However, removing this results in the incorrect movie duration being reported (seemingly anything from 20 to 120 or so hours for a standard movie). This also seems to disable my ability to browse the time and step forward etc.

    I have tested this with another samsung TV (F5500) too and get the same results. All the files I play are mkvs and this happens with about 80-90% of them.

    I've got 7 days left of my trial and would love to get this working so I can purchase it!

    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,

    By removing the DTS section from the device profile, you are telling Mezzmo to not stream any MKV file to your TVs that have DTS audio. So, when you stream an MKV with DTS audio, Mezzmo server auto transcodes the MKV on-the-fly to convert the DTS audio to a compatible audio format. This transcoding is the cause of your duration and FF/REW issues. Samsung TVs want to know the file size of the file being streamed, but since Mezzmo is transcoding the video on-the-fly, it does not know yet the final file size since it is still creating the transcoded video file. So, Mezzmo server tells your TVs a large file size (and that's what you see). When you try to FF/REW, your TV does not let you do this since you may be trying to FF to a section of the video that does not yet exist (since it is being created/transcoded).

    The fix for this is to pre-transcode your videos before playing them and all these problems will disappear. See this FAQ about pre-transcoding - http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread...nscoding-Files.

    Hi Paul,

    Thank you for your help and detailed explanation as to why this is happening. I've tested this and it works now

    Does this now mean that I have to manually transcode files/libraries etc every time I get a new movie?
    As I seem to get a fairly large (GBs) file each time I transcode, is there any way around this? (For example, pre-transcoding automatically when an attempt to play the file is made?)

    I'd love to avoid the need to manually pre-transcode each new movie, and I'd certainly like to avoid the need for a dedicated disk to hold the 1TB+ of transcoded files this would result in.

    I appreciate this isn't a Mezzmo issue, but any advice would be great.

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

    Mezzmo will auto-transcode your files for you when they are not compatible with your device (and device profile) so there is no need to pre-transcode them manually each time. The problem you are having though is due to your TV's firmware limitations and that you want to FF/REW when playing your movie the first time but you cannot when Mezzmo is transcoding the movie on-the-fly. When the movie has been fully transcoded on-the-fly, the next time you play it, it will have the right duration and you will be able to FF/REW since the fully transcoded file exists in your transcoded folder.

    Your requirement for extra disk space for transcoded files is due to your wish to not have DTS audio streamed from your original video files. I guess you have a choice now - either (i) convert your ripped/downloaded movies yourself using a video conversion tools like Handbrake, etc. to change any DTS audio channels to AC-3, etc. (thus only having one video file on disk) or (ii) let Mezzmo transcode your original video for you and you will have both the original file and a transcoded file on disk.
