Thread: Add option "Don't create transcoded file" if QuickSync is detected

Default Add option "Don't create transcoded file" if QuickSync is detected

    Dear Conceiva,

first of all, thank you for such great software.

In my opinion, it would be a good idea to add an option "Don't create transcoded file" in the "Transcoding settings", if Intel Quick Sync is detected.

I understand that for slow systems, where transcoding speed is much less than movie framerate (5-10 fps), saving transcoded or rather pre-transcoded video is a must - that's obvious.

But for PCs with hardware transcoding capabilities, where fps is between 70-140 fps, saving transcoded file could be optional for user.
User could decide if transcoded files should be saved or not by default.

Mezzmo would only read the video file, transcode it "on-the-fly" and not save any transcoding output to HDD.

    Pros:

    • less HDD IO operations / less HDD load
    • longer HDD lifespan
    • less CPU load
    • more responsive PC
    • more free space on HDD

    regards
    Lukasz

Many thanks for the suggestion, Lukasz. It's an interesting idea. One of the negatives to this idea is that FF/REW/Resume would be a problem - since many devices don't let you move around a file that is transcoding on-the-fly. We'll discuss this here more and possibly implement it for a future version of Mezzmo.

BTW - We are currently adding in HLS streaming into Mezzmo, so for devices/apps/web browsers that support HLS, we will now allow transcoding on-the-fly and FF/REW/Resume support - which makes for a much better user experience. Not all devices support HLS though, so your idea may still have the FF/REW/Resume issue depending on the device you are streaming to.
