Default Use Of Mezzmo With Sony HT-RT5 Soundbar?

    Hello,

This may not be the right place to be asking the following question, but I live in hope Up until recently, I was using a Panasonic SC-BT230 home cinema system to access my laptop-based Mezzmo library via DLNA over a wired ethernet, for video, music and photos. I found that although the video formats that the BT230 understood were limited, the Mezzmo transcoding feature pretty well took care of that so I was pretty happy all-in-all. Then the BT230 went belly-up and so now I need to replace it. I have a shortlist of candidates, one of which is the Sony HT-RT5 which although it's generally listed as a soundbar with remote (i.e. surround sound) speakers, actually calls itself a home theatre system. I'd therefore assume that it had some means of handling video streams but I can't find any reference to this or to DLNA in the operator's manual. It mentions audio and image access over a home network but do I take that to mean that it accesses the library filesystem directly, rather than via a server application such as Mezzmo via DLNA? If so, how would you be expected to access your ripped video library with such a system? If you can't, if hardly qualifies as a home theatre system, does it? My TV is of the same vintage as the BT230 and doesn't support ethernet, either wired or wireless, so that's not an option, but in any case, I want a single point of contact with my Mezzmo library and I want to be able to continue to use Mezzmo as I really like it. Any advice will be gratefully received.

    Regards, MSJ

    Hi MSJ,

From reading the manual, it appears that the Sony HT-RT5 can only play audio files (and not video files). This is quite common for amplifiers / receivers / home theater systems - which are dedicated to audio output. You should confirm this with Sony.

To play all your video, music and photos, you will need a endpoint device such as a TV, games console (PlayStation, Xbox, etc.) or a dedicated media player like WD TV Live, etc. Plenty to choose from .

From perusing the manual, apparently the Sony HT-RT5 can play sound records (and not video documents). This is very normal for intensifiers/recipients/home theater frameworks - which are devoted to sound result. You ought to affirm this with Sony, check for more info.
